Not gonna lie, I was always fine with basing the sex (butt- and otherwise) in my fic on other fic, fandom discussions, and internet-based research in general.

But now I'm working on an original novel that I'd like to publish when it's done, and I'm finding myself feeling massively insecure about the porny bits. Even though there's plenty of other stuff in there that I also don't have much or any personal experience with. D:

Get in the shower and stick your fingers up your bum if you want to start somewhere.

Research can also feel nice.

totally serious question here, but is there a chance of hurting yourself (eg tearing yourself in some way) if you're inexperienced and trying this out of curiosity?

Just have lube and don't tense up and you'll be fine. Rub around a little first, start with one finger to see how that goes for you.

Yes.

Clip your nails short and make sure they're smooth first. This is the most important part.

Use something lubricating. It depends how deep you're going to go in. If you're just playing about with the first inch inside your bum (the first sphincter, there are two about an inch apart), soap/shampoo/conditioner/moisturiser/lotion is fine and wash it off afterwards. For deeper, use proper lubricant. I've heard it can be irritating otherwise although I've had no problems personally.

Go slow and don't force anything. If it doesn't feel good, don't do it.

If you get a burning feeling, stop pushing. Wait. This is sometimes just the body adjusting. If it doesn't feel better within about 20 seconds, slowly pull out.

It helps if you're aroused before you start.

Never stick something up your bum if you already have bleeding, tearing or other problems in that area.

The last time I poked around down there, I ended up wondering why the second sphincter never seems to get mentioned in porn, even when the author goes into enough detail to suggest that they do have some idea of what they're talking about. Is it less noticeable in some bums or something?

You're right. I've never seen it mentioned.

Perhaps the word sphincter just isn't sexy, and it's hard to describe the technicalities without using the word.

I've had a few fanfic friends who prided themselves on writing quite technical slash using all the proper terms and even they never mentioned the double doors to the rear palace of pleasure.

I've... taken it and given it, anally, and I never noticed that there were two. Though to be fair it's been years since I last received anal. Feeling with my fingers, though, I've never noticed the second one... I think most people wouldn't notice unless they're looking for it?

Pretty sure anon above me is right: at a certain point, you have to start using more clinical terms to make things clear, and "sphincter" is a horribly unsexy word.

ayrt

wow, thanks for taking the question seriously and offering all that info :) also thanks to everyone else who answered sincerely! this really helps

Please use lube, you can never use too much lube. But if you jump straight to shoving a dildo up there it could hurt - but preparation can be fun and help prevent injury!

That I have done! But there's only so much, ahem, practical research that's feasible for a lady on her own to do; it's the bits involving a partner and/or anatomy I don't have that really make me fret.
