some of it just makes me wonder if they understand how human bodies fit together.

ngl, I've been dragged out of fics FAR more often because people are reaching for things they can't actually reach, or seem to have grown an extra hand, or have physically-impossible double-jointed hips than I have because someone forgot the lube.

There is definitely a lot of Standard Fanfic Myth when it comes to sex though. One person seems vaguely knowledgeable, so suddenly every single fic is following that pattern.

Apparently, having sex in a fic gives you Mr. Fantastic-level bending/stretching abilities. Also, you can teleport. And spontaneously generate and lose limbs at your convenience. Hey, who hasn't wanted an extra arm during sex once or twice?

Honestly, these situations are pretty much the only times I'd recommend that someone watch porn, or at least look at realistically drawn diagrams. Porn stars can perform some absurd feats, but when it comes to basic spatial orientation, it's not a terrible resource, especially if you go for "amateur" stuff. At least it's better than fic written by other clueless folks.
