I agree wholeheartedly and I'll also posit that at least, if not more than, 85% don't even personally know an out gay man.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don't know that I'd go with that figure by any means, given how incredibly queer-leaning fandom tends to be in the first place.

Now as to whether they ask any gay men they know for fic advice, probably not.

I ask my gay male friends for fic advice all the time...

I get unsolicited advice from my bi son, who knows I write m/m...

That's incredibly unlikely. As the above anon pointed out, fannish spaces -- especially those that revolve around slash fanfic, as per this discussion -- tend to lean very queer-friendly and diverse.

But even in general population, that's a pretty unsubstantiated claim. There's no way you could describe my location as anything other than backwoods, aging and hella conservative, and I've personally known many out gay men.

Plus there's this nifty thing called "the internet", and "research" and *gasp!* you can actually read the personal accounts of all kinds of people to gain an insight into their lives and experiences.

Or they know a number of gay men, as is fairly common in fannish spaces, but they either don't have a relationship where asking them prying questions about their sex life is remotely acceptable, or the men they can discuss sex with don't like anal.
