Yeah, I noticed that, too. (Stuff like 'yeah I'm shipper trash' and whatnot) I don't get it

I've seen 'I'm shipper trash' a lot lately and it stumps me. There's also a lot of "I'm in bagginshield hell" in the Hobbit fandom, which I do find pretty amusing if only because of how tragic the ship is (so I get it on that level).

I sort of feel like some people use that kind of language as a kind of defense mechanism sometimes. Like, they feel it would be uncool and too earnest to come out and say that a ship is important to them or that they ship something a lot, so they just call themselves shipper trash instead. It's supposed to make them seem like they already know that they're over-invested in the fandom stuff, so that no one can accuse them of not being self-aware.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one.

I see it a lot, too, with things like Hydra Trash Party, and fics or common AUs that heavily feature unhealthy or sufficiently niche dynamics, situations, etc. By saying "I love this thing, just place me directly in the trash can with it, where I belong," they can avoid the four or five step conversations about "but you know this is fucked up, right?" and "wow, you care way too much about this" and other shaming things.

Oh yeah, that's a big one. I think there's always been sort of a culture of "I'm so terrible for liking this, please leave me alone with my messed up fanfictions" among people who like unhealthy or fucked up Hydra-Trash-Party-level tropes, and this kind of language is just a more concise way of expressing that sentiment.
