Trash

[personal profile] caerbannog 2015-02-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this the new slang. I hate it. It's always used for good things (trash for liking a character?) and minor 'bad' things (bath bombs = trash?).

This makes me feel icky and wince. Just not a nice word. :(

unless they're being racist or a bigot or something. Then sure, trash. But trash for liking or not liking something? I'm getting old and I don't understand and I hate this word. Trash is something you don't want.

*grumbles off*

I don't understand it either. I don't understand why joking-aggression in general is popular in fandom (like people who say things "OMG I HATE YOUR STUPID FACE" "I HATE YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING THIS HOW DARE YOU" etc when they like something). It's always kind of off putting when someone comments on one of my fics and says things like that. I mean, I know they don't mean it and it's supposed to be complimentary, but it just seems...weird. It's not even a new thing though, although I used to see it be more violently-aggressive (people saying things like "If you don't post the next chapter soon, I'm going to kill you lol")

people who say things "OMG I HATE YOUR STUPID FACE" "I HATE YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING THIS HOW DARE YOU" etc when they like something

this makes sense to me in cases where the fic is angsty or ends in a sad way for a ship

and that's the only context that I've seen it in / used it

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
One time, someone in my fandom made a comment like that to me and I was like, "Uh, okay! Ha ha! Thanks!" and she came back to tell me she was serious, I was actually an awful person for making light of her complaints, etc. It was a little embarrassing.

If you don't post the next chapter soon, I'm going to kill you lol

I remember seeing this a lot. A lot of authors just ignored it, but I remember a few that straight up said they wouldn't upload any chapters if they kept getting reviews like that. I don't know why people thought it was cutesy to tell authors that they'd kill them if they didn't write more (sure, they obviously weren't real death threats but it's still kind of creepy)

On the one hand, that sounds a bit like the kind of ribbing that has gone on between some of my friends and I, but on the other, that's really only appropriate with soneone you know well enough that there's no chance of anyone taking it seriously and thinking you're a jerk with anger management problems. The freedom to be fake angry is something you earn over time. People shouldn't leave comments like that if they aren't friends with the author (unless they actually mean it).

It makes me sad :C even if I get that they're using it in some frenemy way I just :c at it, and wince a lot.

But then I don't like calling friends or family "fucks, cunts" etc, no matter how casual or friendly. I feel bad :c

Re: Trash

Yeah, I noticed that, too. (Stuff like 'yeah I'm shipper trash' and whatnot) I don't get it

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-02-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen 'I'm shipper trash' a lot lately and it stumps me. There's also a lot of "I'm in bagginshield hell" in the Hobbit fandom, which I do find pretty amusing if only because of how tragic the ship is (so I get it on that level).

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of feel like some people use that kind of language as a kind of defense mechanism sometimes. Like, they feel it would be uncool and too earnest to come out and say that a ship is important to them or that they ship something a lot, so they just call themselves shipper trash instead. It's supposed to make them seem like they already know that they're over-invested in the fandom stuff, so that no one can accuse them of not being self-aware.

That's why I really hate how commonly that word is used. If someone is trash for being actually shitty like a bigot or something, OK. But then by calling yourself that or calling other people trash for liking a ship, that's like insinuating it's on the same level. That's why it annoys me.

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

I just don't like seeing people calling themselves trash. IDK why it bugs me. Obviously they're not seriously putting themselves down, but that's what it looks like.

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's some kind of reclamation. A lot of people insult girls who ship things or like smutty stuff as gross and dirty for it, and they're just calling themselves that for fun and taking the sting out of the insults. Don't forget 'fujoshi' basically translates that way, it's the same kind of insulting mocking phrase that they're applying to themselves instead. In a way it's acknowledging how liking certain things makes them look, and then cheerfully continuing to do so anyway.

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a good explanation for it.

I guess that makes sense. Still dont' like the term and don't want to see it. Especially don't like it when tumblr uses it in more...general terms, like the friendly "this fandom is trash" and no, don't lump me in with that horrible word I am not trash, no matter how kindly meant >:

I'm unfamiliar with fujoshi.

I don't get it either and I wouldn't use it to refer to something I liked because well, I like it and trash wouldn't convey that for me.

But most slang goes over my head tbh so this is just yet another phrase I will not get.

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think even bigots should be called trash. Calling someone trash is like saying "throw yourself away," in other words "kill yourself."

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
you're reaching for that one

Re: Trash

I dunno "trash" doesn't NEED to mean "kill yourself" to be awful. It's already awful. It's dehumanizing.

Re: Trash

I just hate the idea that I have to self-deprecate to seem modest or something. Sorry, I don't think I'm trash for what fandom things I like. I don't know why I have to act like I should self-flagellate for it since I don't believe what you like in fandom says serious things about your personal morality.

Re: Trash

(Anonymous) 2015-02-13 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ratchet is my weird word thing. Why are you talking about a hand tool? Why does it mean disgusting? One of my highschoolers tried explaining it to me, saying it has something to do with, and I honestly quote, "black culture. Like, the black girls with big butts and work it, y'know..."

"...Like a ratchet?"

"Like a what?"

"-_-..."

But it's supposed to mean gross, like when "a hot mess" was bad thing.

100000% agree. Trash is not a word that should be applied to people. For a while people were (and maybe still are?) calling Sebastian Stan a trash hobo, or talking about his trash-hobo hair and clothes. And they said it as if with great affection. What??

My take on this is: If fanfic tags contain something like "I'm/this story is trash" I'm gonna assume the author is serious and not read it.

Tumblr slang. Because it's socially acceptable on tumblr to call yourself or a character you like "trash". It's mostly about the culture over there, like how it has become socially acceptable to call the things you don't agree with "problematic". Negl both "trash" and "problematic" have left a bad taste in my mouth because of tumblr. lol
