FUCKING PIERS ANTHONY!

OP

I don't remember it being as consistent and intrusive in early Anthony. He could be horrible, but he was horrible briefly enough that I could skip over it. Later Anthony, when he stopped giving a crap about actually telling a story, was unreadable for several reasons.

I dunno, I reread the first Xanth book FAIRLY recently, and that was from back in the 70s, and he makes sure to tell you how bangable/not bangable literally EVERY FEMALE CHARACTER who appears is. The first girlfriend, the girl who becomes his wife, the wife of a guy he helps, the mermaids whose bosoms enchant him...

Uggggggh, Piers Anthony. My friend recc'ed me On a Pale Horse years and years ago. I couldn't get through it. His main female lead was such cardboard.

I utterly loved Piers Anthony's books when I was a horny thirteen-year-old. He had some weird, interesting world building (especially the Cluster and Apprentice Adept series), the sexiness was titillating, and I liked puns. A couple of years later, I suddenly realized I was actually reading a novel literally titled 'The Color of Her Panties,' and not only that, but the characters were utterly flat and unbelievable. Oh, and pretty much nothing of import was happening in the book. And I've loathed his work ever since. That was a very sudden fall from grace...

You, me, and a lot of other folks. I think Xanth is a phase of puberty for geeks. We all go through it around the same age, and it's embarrassing to think back on later.

LOL.

I look upon my past with his books with mild embarrassment, too. My favourite in the Xanth series was the one about the horse... Night Mare. Least sexy book he ever wrote, thank God. In retrospect, that's probably why I liked it...

To be fair, Anthony is NOT good at writing characters of any gender. But yeah, his female characters are worse. They're all bland and centered around how attractive they are to the men around them. Yech.
