Yeah. Sometimes it's freaky how "normal" a line of thinking that is for some people... like of COURSE men only think of women in terms of sex and how bangable they are, what else would they do? It's not weird at all!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a man, but I am a bisexual woman and when I meet people (who aren't kids or a lot younger than me obviously) it usually does cross my mind, the thought of how bangable they are.

Oops.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but fiction is all about conservation of detail -- is the bangableness relevant to the scene, or a hint at the two characters' future relationship, or an important bit of characterization? No? Then it probably shouldn't be mentioned.

Do you do that every single time you see them, though? Meeting them, okay, she's attractive, worth noting. The next hundred times you meet her, though?

But do you honestly not see that's not the same thing? You're allowed to have sexual thoughts about people or to idly wonder sexy things about them. But that is something completely, totally, 100% different from ONLY EVER thinking of or describing a gender in terms of their fuckability factor.

Especially when it's fiction, because that's poor characterization when the story isn't all about people banging. For example, you might be reading a spy thriller where the man is described in terms of his skills, his experience as a secret agent, his drinking problem, the scar he got in 'Nam, whatever. But if the female characters are ONLY described in terms of tits and ass, that's messed up.

I don't think about it for every person. I mean, I come into contact with probably a hundred people a day that I don't think shit about their physical appearance. I mean, yeah, there have been times I've been uncomfortably interested in a girl's breasts when she's jogging across the street but it's not an always thing.

Tigerman isn't quite that bad, which is why I lasted most of the way through. The women have distinct personalities and motivations, and they can actually be interesting. They're just . . . bangable. According to every goddamn scene they show up in.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Not a bad stance to take. I personally find it very annoying, and a bad writing habit (you can't describe a character any other way?), so I'd probably stop reading too.

FUCKING PIERS ANTHONY!

I don't remember it being as consistent and intrusive in early Anthony. He could be horrible, but he was horrible briefly enough that I could skip over it. Later Anthony, when he stopped giving a crap about actually telling a story, was unreadable for several reasons.

I dunno, I reread the first Xanth book FAIRLY recently, and that was from back in the 70s, and he makes sure to tell you how bangable/not bangable literally EVERY FEMALE CHARACTER who appears is. The first girlfriend, the girl who becomes his wife, the wife of a guy he helps, the mermaids whose bosoms enchant him...

Uggggggh, Piers Anthony. My friend recc'ed me On a Pale Horse years and years ago. I couldn't get through it. His main female lead was such cardboard.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I utterly loved Piers Anthony's books when I was a horny thirteen-year-old. He had some weird, interesting world building (especially the Cluster and Apprentice Adept series), the sexiness was titillating, and I liked puns. A couple of years later, I suddenly realized I was actually reading a novel literally titled 'The Color of Her Panties,' and not only that, but the characters were utterly flat and unbelievable. Oh, and pretty much nothing of import was happening in the book. And I've loathed his work ever since. That was a very sudden fall from grace...

Yup, that's a hard no. It's surprising how many books fail that criteria.

Agreed, OP. If it happens once or twice in a story, then okay, fine. But after a while, it starts to get very annoying and very skeevy.

Well that sounds really creepy. Such a shame, because I would've picked up this book just for that cover.

The funny thing is, I loved The Gone-Away World by the same author, and I don't remember him doing anything like that in that book. Maybe it's because the MC in The Gone-Away World is married and the MC in Tigerman has gone years without a significant relationship. Still, it didn't work for me whether it was supposed to be characterization or just the author being pervy.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus Christ, that's gross.

Like, it's normal for people to mention to their friends if they find someone attractive, but talking about raping them? Ugh.

Are the characters saying this supposed to be the heroes or are they villains and the writer is trying to show how evil they are?

OP

In the book I was referring to in the BS (not Tigerman--it was called Sims), the male good guys all wanted to have sex with the FMC, and the male bad guy wanted to rape her. I think there was another male bad guy who hadn't met her yet by the time I stopped reading, so I don't know what he would have thought of her. To be honest, I've mostly blotted that book out of my mind by now.

My husband's initial litmus test for if he keeps reading a book is "Are the women given any characteristics other than haircolor and tit size?"

There's lots of other stuff that can make him stop reading, but that's a weirdly common thing that pops up.

Text: At this point, I don’t even care how awesome your book is.

I’m not gonna keep reading it if, every single time you write a scene with a female character in it, you interrupt it to remind the reader of how bangable or not bangable she is.

BS: The same goes for having literally every major male character talk about how much he wants to have sex with and/or rape the female lead. (Thank you, F. Paul Wilson!)
