I feel like the Homestuck art kind of serves the purpose it needs to serve though, the plot is based around a GAME and the art makes it feel very much like you're playing an old school game.

I actually find it MORE distracting when Homestuck hires outside artists who make everything look pretty, because that doesn't fit the story in my mind.

It's like when I play old school games with poor or simple graphics, I can basically just imagine the plot in my head and the art is just giving me small clues about it. It's like reading a book that has a few illustrations but you are still filling in most of the blanks of the world.

This is just my take, I can understand being turned off by art but for me it usually depends on how much the storytelling really NEEDS the art.

I'm excited for the actual game.

I feel the same way. It's one of the reasons that xamag is my favorite guest artist. She actually takes the time and effort to adapt her own style to that of Hussie's/Homestuck's (aka using blocked colors vs pastel shading, pixelating her edges, etc).

I felt that way about Lexxercise's art when she was still on the art team, at least before her pastel painting in the big 10/25 flash. Her and Xamag have been the only artists who I felt actually tried to adapt to the style of the webcomic.

Ooh, yes. Her stuff in John: Rise Up is so pretty.

I honestly think the biggest offender in Cascade (10/25 flash) is that picture at the very beginning of John with the hammer. I'm always like "WTF. What are you doing here?" when I rewatch it. It's so vastly different from the rest of the comic's style that it's almost like a bad photoshop of an actual painting. It also makes the flash videos seem extremely static, even though they're using the exact same panning/zoom effects. I also dislike the 5x Showdown Combo for the same reason.

Her painting of Jade going God Tier... I don't mind it. It's pretty enough that she almost makes it work. But I would probably love it even more if she'd kept to the style like she did with her previous art.

For example, this is way way more dynamic: http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=008129

I think that's hussie though?

Sorry, miscommunication.

I was showing Hussie's thing as an example of how awesome God Tier Jade can look in the basic style without having to revert to smooth lines/shading.

It was a God Tier Jade example. Not a Lexxercise example.
