I agree. The art looks dumb. Same reason I haven't checked out this "Adventure Time" (?) thing that everyone's raving about. It looks stupid and I have no interest, even if it were to have the best plot in the world.

I still don't even know what either are actually about.

Homestuck seems ugly, creepy, AND hard to get into, AND huge, and...yeah, I can't be bothered either.

Enh, the art doesn't deter me.

Now, the enormous fucking archive and the complete confusion I feel whenever anyone tries to explain what it's ABOUT, now THAT deters me.

I dunno, OP. I used to feel this way about a lot of things, but recently I gave one of my hated art styles a try and was pleasantly surprised to find that the art got better as the story went along, and the story was pretty damned good.

That said, I agree with you that Homestuck is spectacularly ugly.

*shrugs* You like what you like. I've slogged through some absolutely terrible looking comics for story, and while I don't regret it in most cases I completely understand why bad art can be a deterrent. (I need to get back to Deadpool, but was reading from the very beginning and the art is atrocious. It doesn't exactly make me eager to get back to it.)

It's shallow yes but I don't consider that to be a bad reason for not wanting to pick something up, I'd be lying if I said that when I buy comics my choice isn't at least partly inspired by how pretty I find the artwork. This goes for animated movies and cartoons as well, if I find the artwork unappealing I'll be less inclined to try it out.

I imagine that a lot of people do that, it's just that everyone's idea on what constitutes as aesthetically pleasing art is different.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Totally agree with you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Presentation counts for a great deal in visual media such as webcomics, so I can understand the dislike of an art style throwing you out of the series.

(me, I gave up on Homestuck because a lot of characters I'd liked before became very unlikeable very quickly in Act Six)

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2015-02-14 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Perfectly fair. I don't care how good Empowered has turned out to be, I hate hate HATE the way Adam Warren draws faces.

I get that. I've sometimes bypassed comics because the art style really doesn't do it for me, though I usually will give it a shot anyways if I think the story will hook me in. I've had the opposite happen as well, where the art was lovely but the story was terrible. In that case, I will just stop reading even if I like the art.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Andrew Hussey deliberately goes out of his way to make some of the stuff in Homestuck look terrible. That's why it's an acquired taste. I can thoroughly understand why some of the art in there would drive people away screaming ( the Muppet Babies/ Saw crossover comes to mind).
What I don't understand is why some people (not the OP, mind you) have to go on and on about how bad it really is. Or how cracked the fans are. Eek.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like the Homestuck art kind of serves the purpose it needs to serve though, the plot is based around a GAME and the art makes it feel very much like you're playing an old school game.

I actually find it MORE distracting when Homestuck hires outside artists who make everything look pretty, because that doesn't fit the story in my mind.

It's like when I play old school games with poor or simple graphics, I can basically just imagine the plot in my head and the art is just giving me small clues about it. It's like reading a book that has a few illustrations but you are still filling in most of the blanks of the world.

This is just my take, I can understand being turned off by art but for me it usually depends on how much the storytelling really NEEDS the art.

This is a 100% legitimate reason not to read it and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's a comic. It's as much about the art as the story. Sorry, but if the visuals in a visual media are badly done, I'm probably not going to enjoy it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I like the art, but it's been long enough that I realise this is a minority opinion, so let's just let bygones be bygones.

Text: The only reason I have never attempted to read Homestuck is because the art is ugly
It just is. It’s straight ugly, no lie. Looking at it reminds me of pre-teens on DeviantArt

The plot could be award winning. It won’t make the art any less ugly.

S!B Apparently this is shallow. I’m sorry, I thought comics were just as much about the art as they were the plot.

WTFever I’m tired of this fight.

That's how I feel about some things (like South Park). It's understandable.

The plot IS amazing, but yeah if the art bugs you, you probably won't end up liking it much.

For me, I think the ugliness of the style used in most of the comic is part of the appeal. It started out as something really silly that was supposed to look like a cobbled-together MSPA comic. And it does.

it really is so so ugly...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
lol, reading webcomics for the art...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Art isn't about "looking pretty" though. You're right, the art is as much as part of the story as the writing - and Homestuck's art is telling its side of the story too.

I mean... you don't have to read it, if it hurts your eyes that's a valid reason not to. But it's not just randomly like an old video game, Homestuck's aesthetic is extremely intentional and a huge part of the atmosphere and setting.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, amazing how things change. About 5 years ago my head was bitten off right here on fandom secrets for stating Homestuck is unbearably ugly and I can't get into it because of art. "IT IS PRETTY YOU DUMBFUCK, PRETTY AND BEST THING EVER". There was maybe a couple of comments out of a hundred agreeing with me.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading this secret and these comments made me realize why I'm not a "comics" person: I just don't care about art. At all. It's 100% story for me. The art could be atrocious. It could just be a bunch of poorly drawn stick figures. If the story hooks me, I don't care.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-14 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's because I'd read Problem Sleuth, or because I followed Homestuck as it was released since April 10th of 2009, but I never found reading it to be such a chore. I mean, getting into it now would be difficult, but it's not like you have to single-session the whole comic.

As for the art, I'll echo what others have said - it is a deliberate artistic choice, meant to evoke old SNES games (Earthbound is a direct inspiration, for example) and adventure games. People who say he can't draw have never seen some of his other artwork. That's half the reason Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff is at all funny - because I know how much work went into making such objectively bad pictures.

Aesthetically, I like what he's doing. Art serves the story in Homestuck, not the other way around.

As an aside, it's funny you mention pre-teens on deviantart. There's a direct joke about this in some of the more recent stuff, and it's straight hilarious. This deviantart page is actually a part of the comic, and that Vriska art is sublime.
