Re: In honor (not really) of 50 Shades...

I agree with you to some degree, but as someone who's read the first 50 shades book I don't think those who haven't are fully grasping what the objection to it is. it's not really about the sex scenes or kinkiness, and I could even forgive the "dubcon" aspect if it was written in a way that made it clear that Ana wants all of these things, deep down, or ends up wanting them (as dubcon is known to do)...

but Christian makes her feel like shit, constantly! he demeans her, talks down to her, manages to convince her every argument they have is her fault in some way, treats her like a child and patronizes her. in the context of a fantasy man, I can understand how being taken care of and dominated sexually by a billionaire would be GREAT, but I don't get at all how being told you're wrong all the time, feeling terrible about yourself, feeling nervous that you'll anger your boyfriend is a "fantasy." the books are written first-person so you can very easily read what Ana is feeling around Christian and it's never ever positive. how is that a fantasy?!

Hey, I'm with you. If nothing else, that sounds like a slog of a read, boring and whiny. It doesn't sound like my kind of book, and nothing you've written sounds remotely appealing to me.

But the point is, if people out there DO like it, that's kind of what actually matters, isn't it? If by reading it some women are getting swoony and wet, great. The book is for them, then, not me. It's a fantasy because a lot of women are getting into it, so I don't see the point in pretending it's impossible for this sort of thing to have any appeal.
