What is media you have consumed that you just didn't get without outside help (even after repeated viewings)?

For me it is the movie Under the Skin. After reading about the book, what is happening is obvious. I guess they were aiming for some kind of indie, art film atmosphere. But all I got from it was confusion and an awesome soundtrack.

2001 Space Odyssey.

I didn't understand the ending with him getting old in the room until I read the book.

I don't think you are alone in that opinion of 2001! It was made to be confusing, I think.

You're probably right.

The book is pretty straightforward though. (I think; it's been a while since I read it. I remember it being an easy read.)

It's hard for me to think of anything.

probably because for a lot of things I don't really go looking for outside help, so there's probably a lot of things that I don't know I don't get

It's not exactly a "getting it" thing, but it was only after I read Kafka's The Metamorphosis that I heard the theory that it was all in his head. The ending was already unbearably sad for me to the point where I don't ever want to read it again (and I adore Kafka) but that just made it even worse.

I read that in a college class. So I had no way to not get it BECAUSE WE ANALYZED EVERY SENTENCE TWICE!

Completely ruined the story. :

DA obv but I love, love, love analysis like that, where you go through almost word by word. It's so fascinating. It's like excavating meaning out of the text. It's amazing to me.

Ugh, I almost had Romeo and Juliet ruined for similar reasons.

At one point, our teacher had us do an assignment where we had to scour the text for all physical descriptions of each characters. I think Benvolio or Mercutio has exactly one reference in the entire play about bushy eyebrows.

I wish I'd been a cheeky bastard and had just written "WHATEVER THEIR ACTORS LOOK LIKE" across the whole sheet.

So many things about English class coverage of Shakespeare annoys me in hindsight. Plays != novels, and they shouldn't be treated as such.
