The word "bitch" offends me considerably more as a gendered insult than "cunt" does. Despite that "cunt" is an anatomical reference, I've usually heard it used in more generic ways than "bitch," which seems more often to attack different kinds of behavior depending on the gender of the subject.

I don't know. Maybe it's just the ways I personally have heard each used. Anyone else agree? Am I just crazy? I don't know where else to ask something like this.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to post something about this.

Should I feel amazed or predictable?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this way too, but not a single person I've talked about this IRL with agrees with me.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Predictable.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Cunt is like dick or asshole, it's a rude obnoxious stupid person of whatever gender. Or maybe just a friend, if you're in Australia lol

Bitch feels far more gendered in that it's associated with "weakness" "passive aggression" "backstabbing" "incisive" and "female"

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not at all offended by either but I totally get what you mean. As the commenter above said, bitch is associated with supposedly negative female traits, whereas I think most people see cunt as more just an ~offensive word than being specifically related to women/an actual synonym for vagina.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
To me, cunt sounds more dismissive of women as a class. Bitch sounds more pointed and vicious towards women, more generally dismissive towards men. YMMV as to which is worse.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
DA

IDK, if you call a man a cunt it doesn't mean that he's female or feminine, its interchangeable with dick. Women don't really factor in at all there

If you can a man a bitch you are saying he is literally "like a woman" in a negative sense and dissing women at the same time

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-02-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Where I come from, though, 'dick' is pretty mild, and means something like 'idiot', whereas 'cunt' means something like 'a complete bastard and disgusting with it'.

A 'bitch' is someone who deliberately hurts people, typically with nasty remarks, like a RL troll; admittedly, it's only applied to women.

What I hate is when people write b---- instead of writing the word itself. WTF? Do they think they're protecting us from black magic? I once read an entire discussion on a Harry Potter forum thinking that b--- referred to 'bitch' (because I couldn't see the dashes clearly enough to count them) until I realised it was 'bint'.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Uh.

Except that to a lot of men in America, being called a dick is mild. Being called a cunt is worse than being called a pussy, for some reason, and calling a woman a cunt is far more pointed and powerful-seeming than bitch.

IE, a lot of men will call women in general "bitches," but calling her a cunt means you're pissed off.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
regardless

woman are stupid and i don't respect them

I don't mind bitch. It doesn't register as gendered to me at all, but I'm in the same boat as you on cunt. I don't get why a word that means vagina ended up being the most gendered insult possible.

To me, cunt sounds like you're insulting someone who knows what they're doing, you just hate them for it. And I'd prefer to see it in porn rather than 'pussy'.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
ugh god i hate the word pussy. that has to be the least sexy thing a man can call your.... cunt.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
With you 100% on porn terminology. Hell, I'd rather read 'vagina' than 'pussy' if it came right down to it. 'Pussy' just sounds so juvenile to me. Doesn't help that my grandparents' affectionate word for cat is always 'pussy', never 'kitty.'

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I've always found it funny how when a man is called a bitch, he's being accused of acting like a woman. But when a woman is called a bitch, she's being accused of acting like a man.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I find it the opposite way around with the 2nd one. A woman gets called a cunt if she's being too aggressive or masculine, bitch is usually reserved for "catty" and other supposedly girly things

"Bitch" bothers me more than anything else I've been called and I've been called things that even the most anti-sj people here would agree are slurs. I don't know why it bothers me so much. I don't claim that it's objectively worse or anything. That's just how I happen to react to it. The one time I ever hit someone was because he called me a bitch. He wasn't even serious and I didn't mean to do it, it was just an automatic reaction that shocked me as much as him.

Cunt sounds thick and thunky like the word literally comes out of your mouth and hits the ground immediately.

But still, I have a hard time taking anyone who uses it as an insult seriously. At least with the people I've run into, it's not a word they use often. Rather, it's one they save up for a proper occasion to let you know you've really ticked them off, and now they're pulling out the big words. Except, that's really all they tend to have. Like calling someone a cunt is a trump card that wins you the put-down award :U

If it was thrown around as easily and loosely as bitch where I am, I wouldn't be so embarrassed for people who try too hard to pretend they're only situationally uncouth.
Edited (remembered that cunt is pretty casual beyond the sea somewhere waiting for me) 2015-02-18 01:53 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely feel the opposite.

Bitch doesn't even faze me at this point. I've been called a bitch so many times for so many things, tbh it's like a term of endearment to me. My friends are bitches, I'm a bitch, anyone with opinions is a bitch. It's such a bland and mild insult.

OTOH While I'm not offended by cunt, I would be pretty shocked to be called that, or to even hear it said in public casually. I'm American and I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard it said irl and every time it was by someone using the worst insults they could possibly think of. so imo it's a much stronger word.

Bitch at least implies that it's the behavior one finds objectionable (being bitchy, acting like a bitch, crying like a little bitch). Cunt is just you=vagina=THE WORST THING IMAGINABLE which I find a lot more nasty. It's not even like pussy meaning both a vagina and a wimp, where again it's the word being ascribed to a behavior (cowardice or whining) as much as to womanhood. With 'cunt' it's just like "Vaginas are the worst things I can think of therefore you are a vagina."
