I'm not quite as hard-and-fast about it as you are, OP, but killing off a gay/lesbian character is a definite black mark against a series for me. If I really, really enjoyed it beforehand, I'll keep going... but it's never going to reach the heights it did for me before, and I probably won't be nearly so quick to recommend it.
