If the cast features mostly/several LGBT characters, that wouldn't bother me very much.

But if they kill off one of the only LGBT characters and/or half of the one non-heterosexual couples in the work, that pisses me off.

(Unfortunately more works that have stuff like this fall into the later category more than the former.

Even if it's a show that kills a lot of characters in general (like Game of Thrones)? I feel like there's a difference between "let's kill the token gay" or "people die, including the gay ones".

I get being unhappy at gay characters getting fridged or being killed off because they're deemed expendable, but making them sacred and untouchable isn't really the answer if equality is what you're aiming for. In a well written plot, character deaths can serve an actual purpose.

Putting any group on a pedestal will feel just as artificial as using a group of people as literary cannon fodder.

I want to watch the shows y'all are watching that have a ton of non-straight characters so that it doesn't matter when one of them gets killed.

To OP: I totally get you. I'm still pissed about a show I watch killing off half the female cast and the only non-straight character with one death.

Just apropos of nothing, I hate the new tvtropes layout, but I love the more approachable management. With the exception of Fighteer, you can actually talk to them now and not fear reprisal. Hell, even Fighteer has had to rein it back, a couple of weeks back someone chastised him publicly and not only were they not perma-banned, the fucker actually had to publicly apologize to the user they insulted. That never happened when Eddie was in charge. I can't wait until fighteer burns through the patience of the new owners and gets himself a bounce. He deserves it for the shit he's pulled over the years.

Depends on the work for me. If that fridged gay is also the obviously token gay, I'm going to be unimpressed about it even if I didn't like the character. But I also tend to like things that tend to kill off anyone's partners (queer and otherwise) for the sake of angst and manpain (sometimes womangst) anyway.

Now if I like the characters involved, yeah I'll be salty about it.

Not sure why you're getting all these defensive/critical responses. Not wanting a gay character to die on a show you watch isn't the same as requiring them to be immortal, wtf. And okay, wow, sure, guys, there are just TONS of shows with multiple gay characters!

When the expendable characters pretty much always end up being the 'token minority' character, that'd piss me off as well. There's a few shows I watch just because I relate to the LGBT character and if they were killed off, I'd rage-quit.

I don't know why people are trying to talk you out of this. You didn't say it's bad when this happens, just that you don't want to see it. Everyone is allowed to decide that they just don't want to deal with certain things in stories. No wonder so many people around here think SJWs are everywhere if they interpret "I don't like this" as "this should never happen or the creators are terrible".

I get why you would be annoyed but some shows don't shy away from death, and gay characters live and die like everyone else.

Not that I'm saying there are never situations where it seems contrived, but say... Spartacus. Lots of people died in Spartacus, gay and straight. (And bi.) It would've been damn bizarre otherwise.

BUT I want to be clear, I don't think you're a terrible person for not wanting to watch gay characters die either.

Not sure why people are being deliberately obtuse about your meaning here, OP. You even referenced the trope in your secret. FWIW, it's a trope I dislike as well.

(I was already ennnnnh on the Divergent series to begin with, but then when they killed a character and went "surprise! she was totes gay the whole time! lol diversity"? That was when I finally said "fuck this shit" and gave up.)

Just kidding. I usually dislike it myself when the queer character ends up dying for absolutely no reason other than being queer. Whenever a queer character dies it does embitter me to the series.

If it's something where all the characters die or if there's a good diversity spread(race/sex/orientation, etc) in the cast then it wont annoy me so much. (I'd heartbroken if it was my fave character though).

But if it's a show that has a lack of diversity and the only minority characters gets killed off, that will bug me a lot.

What shows are doing this?

I couldn't think of any currently airing shows that I watch that have done this.

What if they come back? (Serious question, I watch sci-fi and soaps, so the possibility is there for some shows - I thought they had done this trope on Warehouse 13, but he actually came back.)

And does it count when it's the random victim of the week, like on a procedural?

Only if I feel queer characters are being specifically targeted is it an auto-quit for me. If the show is balanced about who they off and one of them happens to be queer, that's another thing entirely.

People using 'bury your gays' for something like Torchwood where 3/4 of the damn cast dies is a bit silly. It's not relevant there. Same goes for other shows that constantly kill characters; unless queer characters are killed at a disproportionate level or no queer characters are left living at the end of the work.

But otherwise yes this is an awful trope that needs to stop.
