I know. All these arguments about the hundreds of theoretical shows stuffed full of gay characters!

Uh guys, that's exactly the point.

But would it have been so hard to say they'll quit if the only gay character, or one of a handful of gay characters, is killed off? It's only a few more words and it makes things much clearer.

The page they used as their background says that the trope doesn't apply when the cast is all or mostly gay.

Most shows that have gay characters only have one, or "a handful" of gay characters. That's the point.

But they said they don't care what the creator's excuse is, which suggests it doesn't matter how many gay characters there are. I get that your interpretation is probably what they meant, but it still isn't what they said.

You're being a pedant. The situation you're offering is completely hypothetical; the OP is very clearly saying this in the terms of current mainstream media offerings.

No, you're right, they didn't. But, again, when there are barely any shows that have many gay characters (those that bother to have any to start with), it hardly feels necessary. I mean, it kinda feels like a given.

Why are you assuming that's what the OP meant in the first place? (Plenty of people have commented saying that's what they'd do in OP's place, but OP hasn't said that.) I think it's very possible that OP--after having seen this trope played out again and again in less balanced works--is in fact tired of seeing gay characters killed off at all, regardless of whatever ameliorating conditions might surround their deaths.

Christ, does it matter?

This trope has become a deal-breaker for the OP. I'm not sure why they need to justify that to FS's satisfaction to make it acceptable. It's a shitty trope, so they nope out when they catch a reasonable whiff. I say good for them.
