Not sure why you're getting all these defensive/critical responses. Not wanting a gay character to die on a show you watch isn't the same as requiring them to be immortal, wtf. And okay, wow, sure, guys, there are just TONS of shows with multiple gay characters!

When the expendable characters pretty much always end up being the 'token minority' character, that'd piss me off as well. There's a few shows I watch just because I relate to the LGBT character and if they were killed off, I'd rage-quit.

Yo this.
Some of these responses are kiiiinda ridicules.

Unless its a show like GOT of walking dead, I don't see why you shouldn't get mad if the only gay character is killed off. Seems like a reasonable reaction to me.

I know. All these arguments about the hundreds of theoretical shows stuffed full of gay characters!

Uh guys, that's exactly the point.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
But would it have been so hard to say they'll quit if the only gay character, or one of a handful of gay characters, is killed off? It's only a few more words and it makes things much clearer.

The page they used as their background says that the trope doesn't apply when the cast is all or mostly gay.

Most shows that have gay characters only have one, or "a handful" of gay characters. That's the point.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
But they said they don't care what the creator's excuse is, which suggests it doesn't matter how many gay characters there are. I get that your interpretation is probably what they meant, but it still isn't what they said.

You're being a pedant. The situation you're offering is completely hypothetical; the OP is very clearly saying this in the terms of current mainstream media offerings.

No, you're right, they didn't. But, again, when there are barely any shows that have many gay characters (those that bother to have any to start with), it hardly feels necessary. I mean, it kinda feels like a given.

Why are you assuming that's what the OP meant in the first place? (Plenty of people have commented saying that's what they'd do in OP's place, but OP hasn't said that.) I think it's very possible that OP--after having seen this trope played out again and again in less balanced works--is in fact tired of seeing gay characters killed off at all, regardless of whatever ameliorating conditions might surround their deaths.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Christ, does it matter?

This trope has become a deal-breaker for the OP. I'm not sure why they need to justify that to FS's satisfaction to make it acceptable. It's a shitty trope, so they nope out when they catch a reasonable whiff. I say good for them.

Not wanting a gay character to die on a show you watch isn't the same as requiring them to be immortal, wtf.

But the OP says that ANY show that kills off a gay character, they will no longer watch. That includes shows where everyone dies, like "Game of Thrones" or "Walking Dead".

Personally, I'd add "Gray's Anatomy" to that. If they killed off Arizona, I wouldn't have a problem with it because everyone dies there. Tons of straight characters have already bitten the dust. Heck, not even whathappenedlastweek is sacred there.

OP just pained with too wide a brush, in my opinion.

*painted* Gah.

Well, considering OP didn't say what shows they personally watch, I'm not at all convinced of the relevance of your examples. What if OP exclusively watches comedies and cheesy sci-fi shows? Characters can die on those shows, but it's certainly not a genre expectation.

Could be at the time of writing the secret Op was just Over It. I certainly have moments where I'm so sick of a certain trope I'll drop the media like a hot brick if it does it.

I might come back in a while, I might not. What matters is at that particular time I didn't want anything to do with x trope, so I dropped the media that had it.

There's more to life than the boob tube. There's even media out there with more than one LGBT character.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
i think what I find kinda silly about it is the idea of treating it as a blanket policy

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
It pisses me off when a token minority gets killed off as an expendable death too, but it'd still be ridiculous for me to say that I don't ever want to see any minority killed in books/tv/movies no matter what.
