(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 04:57 am (UTC)(link)Look at penny dreadfuls in the Victorian era. Look at Samuel Richardson's Pamela, a 1740s novel about a young woman taken in by a hot, wealthy as fuck gentleman who rules her life and is an abusive dickface until he finally has a change of heart and wifes her. It was popular as hell and also had moral crusaders crying for the author's blood. Fun fact, Pamela inspired the Marquis de Sade's Justine, which was considered absolute horse shit filth at the time.
Sweet Christ, I think FSOG is a piece of garbage, but there's always been garbage lit throughout history. Don't act like literature has somehow been in some sort of sweeping Golden Age of Rainbow Unicorn Farts until Twilight and FSOG came on the scene.
