18. I'm sort of glad the second half was there. It was fun to see Light as "God" whilst it lasted and although I disliked Near greatly, I thought Mikami was an awesome character and great addition to Death Note - his past was incredibly touching, his "deletions" were epic (particularly in the anime version) and I loved his whole worshipping of Light. Mmm.. Light/Mikami.
Matt.. was pretty pointless. Mello grew on me. And of course Matsuda was still there~ I love Matsuda!
As for Light's death.. I already knew it was going to happen, so I guess my inspiration for finishing the second half came from wanting to find out exactly HOW he died. He was my favourite character and I was sad that he died, but at the same time, I found it very interesting seeing exactly how his life ended. o_O

I don't really get why so people have a problem with Light's death, so perhaps I'm a bit blinded as to why a lot of people hate the second part of the manga. I mean, to me, his death really is what made the story, you know? We knew right from the start that Light was working toward a contradictory end, because there wasn't a place for someone like him in the world he was trying to create. His death did a lot to balance his overblown rhetoric and naive intentions, since in the end he was still susceptible to the same laws (i.e. laws of nature) as every other person on the planet - despite how much power and control he thought he had.
So even though I found Light to be really interesting, I was glad he died because I really do think it made for a better story than "AND THEN, HE IS GOD" would have. (Although the second ending would perhaps have been more unique!)
Er, sorry for rambling there, but you get the point.

I totally agree. Even though I liked Light, his death left me satisfied because it gave it closure. And it was a creepy death to boot. I would have been disappointed if I never got to see him die.

I think it's less to do with Light's death, and more to do with the fact that the entire fandom completely loves L and so most didn't want to read any more after he died.. Maybe it's just me, but I personally found Light to be much more interesting than L ever was, so I didn't really care about that. :/ *shields herself from thousands of L fangirls* ..And seeing how Light outsmarted L (and Rem) was, again, fascinating.
