Even before she backpedaled, I think she got way too much blame for the anti-vaxx movement. People are perfectly capable of making ignorant, anti-scientific choices all on their own.

Tons of people believe in things that are only supported by pseudoscience: homeopathy, ESP, astrology, Creationism/Intelligent Desgn, ghosts, no climate change, you name it. It's just that most of the time, those beliefs don't backfire on them so badly.

I don't think she deserves either the credit or the blame for convincing people to make bad choices based on bad science when people do that for themselves every day.

No. Fuck her. People died because her stupidity. Rage on against this sack of shit.

Anyone taking medical advice from Jenny McCarthy is pretty obviously too dumb to live anyway.

Sorry, we're still at the point where no moderation or reason is possible in this regard. Everyone who is anti-vax must be blamed and vilified as fully and as harshly as possible. Because otherwise... I don't know, it would be bad, somehow, if we didn't take every opportunity to be as extremely anti-vax as possible, even in communities where every single person is anti-vax.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
there are social moments where there's a genuine public need to tilt as harshly as possible while retaining some empathy for the people involved. I have empathy for McCarthy; by being the face of anti-vax, she is now symbolic of the ire over a lot of endangered kids.

but.

kids are going to fucking die and diseases are going to ramp the fuck up if we do not stop this backwards ass dumb fucking trend of anti vax fuckery. I do not think she needs to be burned out of her house or something else as ridiculously over-the-top, but what she said and supported is going to have consequences for fucking decades. she's simply going to have to deal with that and live her life. i have empathy, but not sympathy.

Has she ever apologized for her support of the anti-vax movement? If not, fuck her. I mean, she claimed her son was "recovered" from autism by a change in diet.

It sucks for her, but when you are the face a huge, moronic movement; you are going to be the one dealing with the hate.

This feels like the sort of thing where some data would make the whole debate pointless. Either she significantly affected people's actions or she didn't. Are there any studies analyzing how much influence she had in the creation of the anti vaxxers movement?

She probably does get too much blame, but...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
She did kind of make herself the celebrity spearhead for the movement with the books and the interviews.

And this pseudoscience can cause death, not just in the kids of the anti-vaxxers, but in the kids that can't get vaccinated (due to age, allergies, or other health issues). And that makes people angry.

Oh man do not get me started on homeopathy, I am still so fucking pissed at the chemist who gave me homeopathic supplements after I had explained what I was looking for. I always double check the ingredients and subtitles now, rather than blindly trusting the chemist to do his FUCKING JOB.

She appointed herself the public face of the anti-vax movement. Sucks for her that people are angry, but you can't take a public position- especially one that endangers the health of children- and then go "but why are you being so mean to me?" when people react accordingly.

can of worms

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
what about cases like mine?

my parents didn't get me all the vaccines (mostly the reinforcement, i got the basics as a baby) because, after research, my dad found out that we locally got really crappy vaccines that caused all sorts of bad reactions because of faulty or dangerous components

this still happens, judging from the news

the downside was that i got measles (presumably because i never got the follow ups to the first shot as a toddler)

i feel guilty over the herd immunity side, but on the other, i'd rather not die of lead intoxiation or what have you

People should learn to do their own thinking, not blindly accept anything.

I do agree that people should take responsibility for their own choices and should be held accountable for them.

I want to say that saying astrology has even pseudoscientific support gives it too much credit. It's blatantly unscientific.

Or maybe that's the point; that people misunderstand what science is and what science is for too that degree, that it seems scientific to them.

Also, is "boob goals" a thing? I mean, I know they're fake, but man, her boobs look really good in that dress and I kind of want them.

i think what people don't stop to think about is that she believes she has her kid's best interest in mind and she's doing good.

i also think you're spot on, op. not even just pseudoscience either. there's so much misinformation on political issues too. so many people, myself included, make snap decisions based on maybe an article or two. it's really amazing how much people base their beliefs on what's actually a very small amount of information.

when people with a lot of media exposure voice their opinions, their fans are influenced by that. i wouldnt consider her the catalyst of anything for sure but thats certainly not to say she hasnt made an impact on the amount of people who were convinced one way or another in some part because of her. it's dangerous.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree she gets too much blame and I'd be surprised if all that many people made the choices they did based on what she says. And even if they did, it's still not her fault. She has an opinion. It's up to the individual whether you agree with her or not or take her advice.

Really, the level of hate she gets and the hysteria over the whole measles thing is pretty ridiculous. First of all, the vast majority of people in US were vaccinated or are immune from having had it before the vaccine. Second, the fatality rate is something like less than one percent. And how many cases are there in the US right now really? Last I heard, it was fifty. Out of 325 million people. But it's being hyped as if it's the influenza outbreak of 1918 with bodies and potential bodies piling up while Jenny McCarthy laughs manically.

The sad thing is that I'm seeing the exact same people who rightfully criticized the freak out over ebola freaking out even more over measles. The same people who didn't want people quarantined without symptoms of ebola want all unvaccinated people out of schools. One poster even suggested they should all be put in tent cities away from the general population. It's crazy. I don't get the fear and I don't get the hysteria and I certainly don't get the hate. And that's what it is. Hate. For no rational reason.

And to all the 'one death is too many' people. Get real. We don't freak out over everything that kills us. The same people screaming about measles aren't screaming about car accidents or ladder falls or anything else that might get us. If I lost my immunity tomorrow, I still wouldn't be scared I'd die from measles or even that I'd contract it. But I'm beginning to be afraid of how easy it is to whip people up into a drooling, hate-fueled frenzy over anything and everything.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ok. I'm Pro-Vax. I think she is a moron buying into stupid science. I think she is puting her kids at risk because the "science" she chooses to follow does not fall inline with the science I choose to follow.

BUT

You all are fucking crazy. Can you not see this? She is, I believe, wrong. But if the mainstream scientific community comes out with something I think is dangerous, I have every right not to go for it. If suddenly every scientist comes out telling me cigarettes are good for you, I won't give a fuck, I won't give my kids cigarettes.

Unlikely, but you see how stupid or not, choosing not to believe the scientific community is a choice people have the right to make, right? No-one should be forced to do shit to their own body, or do shit to their kids bodies if they feel it is unsafe. Even if that feeling is, to all the people following and trusting the scientific and pharmaceutical communities, WRONG.

If you're stupid and wrong, that is no reason to have your bodily autonomy violated, and all this hate is just plain vile.

Yes, people around these unvacced people are at a greater risk, but it is no-ones obligation to subject their bodies to something they don't want to make the people around them safer. Selfish? Maybe, but in the above example, I wouldn't start smoking so that people can get the benefit of my second hand smoke.

Honestly, this whole viscous shitshow just proves to me that if religion had never existed, people would have started wars and hate groups over which type of scientists they follow.
