Text: I think I’ve officially listened to too much JPop.

I have an extremely hard time singing “la la la” anymore. I always end up flipping my L/R’s. Even during choir practice.

I don't get it... Japanese pronounces "la" the same as English, doesn't it? It's the Rs that all turn into L sounds.

It's both Rs becoming Ls and Ls beoming Rs. The Japanese pronunciation of that consonant is kinda in between the two sounds.

Not really... while it's true that some Japanese skew the l/r sound more towards l (and then they default everything as l), the general romanization is r, and more often I've heard l's skewing to r's than the other way around. So you'd more commonly hear 'ra ra ra' than 'la la la'.

It's really subtle. Found one example, studio version has an English person singing, live version has Japanese people.

It's like rLA rLA rLA vs LA LA LA. The tongue hits the teeth a bit more with the former. Even then you can barely hear it unless you know what to listen for.

Japanese does not L or R. They have a single consonant that "translate" as either. The sound itself is in between both. I notice that depending on the regionalaccent of tthe speaker, and the particular word, it can sometimes sound closer one way or the other.
