damn

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
We all deal with death in different ways.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is sad, but I also think it's heartwarming.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-19 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
She probably want to cheer you (and possibly herself) up with a little dark-ish humor and a fandom reference. Sorry for your loss; I also think your mom is pretty rad.

Yeah, same. Sounds like something my mom would say if she were fannish.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, this is so sad. *hugs*, anon.

...someone want to explain to a perplexed anon?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thestrals are magical creatures from the Harry Potter series. They are invisible to the average person and can only be seen by people who have seen at least one person die.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-20 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Technically they an only be seen by people who have seen at least one person die, and understand that it was death. That's why Harry couldn't see them pre-fourth book, even though he had (technically) seen his mom die; he was too young to understand it, but he could see them post fourth-book, after Cedric died, because he saw Cedric die and understood it.

/pendant anon is pendant

Thestrals are also a metaphor for how it changes everything when you first really experience a death. And when it's someone truly close to you? Honestly, that first experience of terrible loss feels like you suddenly belong to a secret club. You only get to find out who else is a member (= has gone through it too) if you actually come out and confess that you're bereaved.

...Actually, thestrals would be damn useful sometimes.

TY for the explanation.

That's really sad, but also sort of beautiful.

I'm sorry :( It's totally reasonable to make fiction connections like that to get through real life stuff. That's what fiction's all about, I guess.

I'm sorry for your loss. That's a rad thing for your mom to say though. I hope thinking that helps her through the pain.

This is one of the most touching secrets I've seen. *hugs*

Sorry about your grandmother.

Your mom sounds amazing.

I had this same thought when I watched my Dad die, but what I actually said was, "I told you I didn't want to be here when you died, you bitch, but no. You always have to have your way."

One of the things about grief is that there isn't a wrong way to do it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-20 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I just choked up really badly.

This was one of the thoughts I had after watching my mother die. It was a painful experience (she died from asphyxiation after being taken off life support).

Text: Shortly after my mother watched my grandmother die she said to me

I guess I can see thestrals now

(Anonymous) 2015-02-20 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I said the same thing after watching my dad die.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-20 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the same thought after watching my own mother die. Hit me like a truck full of bricks and I did not expect to be so affected by the thought.

I watched my father die a little over a year ago, and surprisingly this is the first I've thought about thestrals. Thank you for sharing this with us.
