First of all, I'm sorry you went through that OP. It's hard to go through prejudice and feel ostracized, especially by your own family. However, representation like this can only be beneficial. Sure, not for the ones who already are stubborn and set in their own opinions. But for those who are still young and trying to form their own views on the world, or those who are willing to listen but just don't know where to look.

And even if you don't want to see it, there is an abundance of atheists and agnostics who are homophobic, sexist, and misogynistic. Religion or lack of one does not indicate whether a person is a bigot, hateful, and unaccepting.

This is something many people don't realize. Some people are just bigots because they're bigots. And I think while some are homophobic and sexist because that's the belief system they're ingrained in, others use it as a bit of a cover.

NAYRT-- yeah, there are assholes in every group. I think atheists and agnostics who claim never to be bigoted or prejudiced are fooling themselves-I'm an agnostic atheist who was raised as an agnostic atheist, rather than coming to that belief/lack thereof as an adult, and I'm not some kind of enlightened being.

If someone was raised believing in a religion that encouraged some kind of bigotry and then rejected the religion, that wouldn't necessarily mean they'd rejected the bigotry, or maybe even realized they were being bigoted in the first place. Bigotry isn't intrinsic to religious belief, and a lack of religion doesn't indicate a lack of prejudice.
