In honor of the new season of Night Shift

[personal profile] mekkio 2015-02-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
In your most humble opinion, which non-American actor has the worst American accent?

We always hear about the non-American actors with the great fake American accents. Now is the opposite. Which one makes you go, "Oh, you are not fooling anyone, pal."

Eoin Macken is up there. In season one of The Night Shift it was like he couldn't be bothered to hide his Irish accent. In the trailer to the new season, he sounds better.

I don't know if it's the WORST, but oh, Gina Bellman, you can NOT do a Texas accent, honey.

Her Southern accent in "The Two-Horse Job" was pretty unintentionally hilarious, too. (That said, for all the accents she had to do on "Leverage," she usually did well. Hell of a lot better than any of my accents anyway...)

I'm having trouble thinking of a non-American example, but LeoD's "South African" accent was pretty frickin' hilarious.

Oh, Tennant did an American (John Wayne-y) accent in some audio book once that was pretty wretched. I din't watch the US Broadchurch, so I don't know if he's improved it since, but it was incredibly distracting.

I have accused his accent in the US version of Broadchurch of being Canadian.

SOOKEH!

Everyone from True Blood but especially the guy who plays Bill. But I really hate people faking Southern accents period.

His accent was so bad that it became part of the show's campiness and won me over. I loved the way he said SOOKEH!

I was cackling every time Miranda Otto turned up in The Way We Live Now because he accent was so all over the place. I guess it was supposed to be Texas-ish? With a large dose of Scarlett O'Hara (also totally fake Southern), tbh.

Her character was kind of awesome (she's this weird black widow-type) and she vamped all over Cillian Murphy, but that accent was a bit awful.

Some Southern accents are so cringe worthy and over the top.

I feel like Nashville does a fairly good job of it.

Especially because the rest of the country doesn't seem to understand that there is a difference in phrasing between the states in the South and it's not just a general Southern accent.

I thought the guy who played Jason did okay.

The lady on CSI who played Sophia. Her accent was terrible.

Haha, agreed about Eoin Macken. I like the guy (he's the reason I watched the show in the first place) but just...oh. I mean, I'm terrible at figuring out whether someone's American accent is real or fake, so I spent a lot of season 1 wondering if maybe I was just used to his Irish accent and that's why I thought he sounded kind of Irish, but I eventually came to the conclusion that no, it wasn't just me, he actually did sound kind of Irish.

I ended up headcannoning that his character had spent a lot of time in Ireland throughout his life so that's why his accent was a bit transatlantic. Pretty sure Callahan is an Irish name anyway, so who knows?

That's what I headcanoned too. Like half his family is Irish American (maybe a generation or two at the most) and the other half is Irish, fresh off the boat. So, he grew with this accent being all around him. With him spending summers with family in Ireland.

I don't know about worst since he does a good job usually, but Simon Baker loses his accent entirely when he lowers his voice.

Jimmy McNulty.

Re: In honor of the new season of Night Shift

(Anonymous) 2015-02-21 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, he's not terrible. He and Carcetti don't sound Bawm'r at all, but they sound passably American. McNulty's kind of wanders off at times, depending on the vowels, but it's okay.

Aiden Gillan comes across more Midwestern/Chicago-y than anything (he sounds like Jeremy Piven), and I can't remember anything in the series that specifically says he's a Baltimore native so I think it's not unreasonable he's from the Midwest. For some reason he can maintain that accent more steadily than whatever blend of Irish and English Littlefinger has!

I have no interest in medical shows and even Eoin couldn't get me to watch. :(

More on topic, I found Ewan McGregor's accent in Big Fish and I Love You Philip Morris kinda iffy but he did OK. On the opposite side, I had no idea that Jennifer Ehle (Elizabeth from the BBC Pride and Prejudice) was American until very recently. I was convinced that she was straight-up English.

Ewan McGregor has a pretty rough one.

I actually disagree with people who say that whatshisname from House has a good American accent. It's nasally, hollow, and way too high.

The thing about Hugh Laurie's American accent is that is sounds kind of nasal, but it also sounds like it's a character whose voice is naturally nasal/tight. He holds it very consistently and speaks in it "easily" ie, can do many different inflections/tones while maintaining it. It's always distracting when an actor holds an accent for normal spoken dialogue then can't keep it up when they're yelling/being sarcastic/tenderly whispering to a loved one. Major pet peeve.

Sean Bean has a terrible American accent. Just...no. Don't. Stick with what you do best, Sean, I beg you.

how exactly is this show? I remember seeing ads for it last year or so, but I couldn't care less. After watching Merlin and getting a good gander at Eoin Macken, I may check it out.

Is it worth it, struggling American accent included? (Irish accent is not a problem at all for me, lbr)

Also, I can think of a bad American accent right now (though I know I have heard many). They tend to be from English actors, and the accent does indeed tend to be Southern. And agreed, not everyone from the south sounds genteel or like a hick. I have a few friends and some family down there and they don't always sound that way.

not even nearly the worst but I remember everyone praising Hugh Laurie for his accent on House but it always sounded so bizarre to me, like he was an alien attempting human language. he put so much over-emphasis on every syllable it was just awkward.

Not sure about the worst, but I wasn't impressed with Karen Gillan's at all.
