I'm bemused by the number of comments going "RPF is fine so long as you're not creepy about it!" - where "creepy" is such a subjective word, it's essentially meaningless.

You can fantasize about who you like, but the act of writing those fantasies down, and putting them on the web to share with others - that may be the thin edge of the wedge of "creepy", but IMO it's still definitely on there.

Unless the celeb in question has actually indicated that they're okay with RPF (which I'd guess happens pretty much never), the "not creepy" thing to do is assume they probably wouldn't like it (I certainly wouldn't, in their place), and not participate in it.

The non-creepy thing to do is also assume creators of original work wouldn't like fanfiction and fanart to be made. I mean, a lot of them have explicitly said they're against fanworks. But we'll defend those until we're blue in the face.

The way it's subjective is that we don't think it's creepy if we're doing it, and if the majority of people in our community think it's okay.

AYRT

False equivalence... Fictional characters cannot object to being used as fictional characters. Real people can object to being used as fictional characters.

(I'm not dismissing out-of-hand the argument that unauthorised fanfic may be considered wrong, but the reasons are different, as is the potential creepiness factor.)
