4. Don't worry. Johnny Depp's not much of a singer, but the movie's still great. The OP is just bitching about Depp's accent, in my opinion. And the part about Edward Scissorhands was unnecessary.

Well, see, that's part of my problem with the movie. Depp's a great actor, but he's NOT a singer. You could get away with that in almost any other musical...Sparta dude did in Phantom...but this is Sondheim. A genius composer. His music really can't be half-assed like that. You need people who can sing to show off the brilliance of his melodies.

Not the secret's OP, but...

Honestly, the movie itself it pretty amazing -- this coming from a long time Sweeney Todd fan. Visually it's great, great costumes, great sets, mostly great cast, etc. Johnny Depp, though, has all the personality and nuance of a mannequin. :/ I love Johnny Depp, and I was very disappointed with his performance in it -- because I know he could do so much better. Even if he can't sing, he's a much better actor than what he showcased in that film. I guess you could write it off as "character choices", but when your character choice mean employing the same facial expression through 90% of the film, well.

Tl;dr - Movie itself is okay, but Johnny was not.

All my personal opinions, of course. In before I'm flamed to death by Deppfags.

Not a Deppfag, you're safe with me :D

I'm also a long-time Sondheim fan, and I just..can't bring myself to see it. I'm just disgusted. It LOOKS good, and beautiful and all that, but I can't bring myself to see a movie where Tim Burton has used Depp for the 15 BILLIONTH time in a role where he DOES NOT FIT. Depp is not Sweeney to me. And he can't fucking sing. As I said in the above comment to dioschorium, this is a composer you can't get away with having an actor who can't sing.

Also not #4 OP, but...

I think you just summed up all the reasons I'm not going to bother getting this movie when it comes out on DVD. It was good, but it could have been a lot better.
