You really need to start thinking about other people, particularly the Japanese artists who usually have great big banners in english on their sites asking for their works not to be used.

It's so easy to say 'cry moar'. Clearly doing the right thing and crediting is too hard.

Re: 25

(Anonymous) 2008-01-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not an excuse.

Is it that hard to show some respect?

Re: 25

[identity profile] kamina.livejournal.com 2008-01-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone who gets offended over pixels on the internet gets no respect from me.

Re: 25

(Anonymous) 2008-01-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone who can't differentiate between intellectual property and pixels shouldn't be allowed on the internet.
Think it over, would you?

Re: 25

[identity profile] kamina.livejournal.com 2008-01-06 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. I'll spend the rest of my afternoon debating how wrong and unworthy of the internet I am because of tiny squares I produce that are completely intangible and worthless. Then I'll delete my community right after I cry moar.

Re: 25

It's about respecting the artists who give you so much joy when you make icons.

Surely you can see the hypocrisy in not asking anyone to modify or claim credit for your icons.

What if the fanartists didn't want their work modified?

Re: 25

[identity profile] kamina.livejournal.com 2008-01-06 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
If I could credit every piece of fanart I used, I'd love to and I would. I, in all honesty, don't think it's that big of a deal. I could very easily just not icon fanart, but I like to, and it's not a big deal, so I'm going to keep on doing it.

Thanks for your input, maybe you should take the internet a little less seriously.

Re: 25

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Translation: I'm too lazy to find the original artists.

The internet is not exempt from the rules that apply in real life. A little research, and I'm sure you could find most of the artists.

3 and 10 from PW on your most recent icon post are by tokiya (http://nt.sakura.ne.jp/~tokiya/) for a start.

Uhhh, no, the artwork is still the intellectual property of the artist, even if the character designs etc aren't.

The hours of practise, the tools, the style... all of that makes the work individual to the artist and as such should be respected.

The difference between fanart sites and this icon maker is that they usually indicate the series they are paying homage to.

An icon maker cannot say they are paying homage to an artist if they don't link to somewhere the artist can be found.

Re: 25

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, using someone's art and not crediting it--whether it's fanart or not--is more akin to taking someone's fan fiction and putting your name on it, or using big chunks of the text they've written in your own fic. Fan fiction or not, that's still plagiarism.

Just because "it's the internet" doesn't mean you suddenly have a free pass to be an unethical douche.

Dude, it doesn't mean that what they're doing is right.

Also, the internet isn't exempt from rules that apply in RL.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-07 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
They're taking somebody's artwork... without their permission. This is wrong, it's stealing.

If they're using the artwork without permission but crediting the source... well, this is still wrong but it's a step in the right direction as at least the artist isn't anonymous anymore and people can still learn about them.

Additionally, there are no degrees of what is right and wrong like you say in your post above... the size of the icon or amount of fiction stolen is irrelevant. The fact is that it's been taken without permission.

[identity profile] kyriesanctus.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's why most artists are now in the practice of heavily watermarking or signing their artwork somewhere. Most people are too lazy to try to extract a huge watermark..

Soo.. If you don't want your artwork to be stolen, use a watermark.

Or, if you at least want to be credited, put a READABLE signature on it that points in the direction of your website/name whatever. That way people can say, "this art is by _____."

If an artist doesn't do either, quite frankly, they're just making themselves an open target to have their artwork stolen or changed. It's the internet, people should be smart enough by now to know that words aren't enough anymore.

Anyone who goes to lengths to remove watermarks or signatures on the bottom of a picture just to steal it or use it in an icon clearly has far too much time on their hands and I feel sorry for them. U_U;;

Additionally, there are no degrees of what is right and wrong like you say in your post above... the size of the icon or amount of fiction stolen is irrelevant.

Incorrect, actually. Depending on what you're doing with the artwork/fiction, creating a new derivative work from a small portion may or may not be entirely wrong.

[identity profile] sophiaplease.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
i definitely agree on that.

i'm an artist myself and for me it doesn't matter if people use my fanart for icons, that's fine. i'm sure people will ask who did it and they will either tell that person or not. Doesn't make a difference to me.

once you put it out on the net and in the open, prepare to deal with whatever happens. which is why i don't always put my original stuff out there.

and sorry [livejournal.com profile] haikuninja i just wanted to add on to what you said :]! cute icon by the by ;D!

[identity profile] degreve.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but I couldn't help but jump in on that comment. I think that it mostly depends on the artists themselves as to whether others should utilize their work. While it's no big deal for you, it may be the complete opposite to another. If an artist prohibits anyone from using their artwork, then that rule should be respected.

As for posting their work on the internet, I don't see a big deal with it. They post them up for others to enjoy viewing. You wouldn't attend an art gallery and just start yanking portraits off the walls, would you?

As an artist myself (not a particularly good one, but eh) I have to agree -- if I was that protective of my art, I wouldn't be posting it on the internet. Or at the least, I would watermark it and disable left-clicking etc. But I'm not -- I enjoyed making it and I don't mind if other people enjoy using it. I would like credit, but even that doesn't really matter that much to me. Even my icons -- whatever; it's a 100x100 pixel image, hardly something to get into a fight over. ^^'

I do not know this person, but I have to ask you how you expect them to credit their source if they dont even know their source

Re: 25

(Anonymous) 2008-01-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If they don't know the source, they shouldn't use it. Not everything you can find on the internet automatically belongs to you.
