This is America-bashing?

a light case, maybe, but still... whining about how "movie" is an american term and getting indignant about the title of something for children reeks of eurosnobbery and entitlement

I don't see how it's any more entitled than expecting stringent Britpicking in a fic, but I see where you're coming from.

Whereas of course we should just roll over and humbly accept that our cultural overlords will just have everything their way, right?

Sigh.

It's not cultural overlords, it's money overlords. You want it aimed at Americans with an American style title because the market there is HUGE. I know China is another huge market but the title is going to be in Chinese, so the whole movie/film debate is moot.

Also, in America "film" is used but it is attached more to movies that are aimed at mature audiences. Not even the 18 and over set but more of the 30 and over set who like to watch challenging indie films. "Movie" is aimed at all ages, including the youngest audiences. So, if you want your audience to know that they are watching a sophisticated, adult aimed movie, you use "film." If you want to show that this is for everyone, especially kids, you use "movie." That part is actually culture.

Snobby? Maybe! America-bashing? Uh... no? It wasn't intended as such; I don't really see how it could logically be taken as such. Is this a knee-jerk reaction that someone pointing out the [perceived] Americanness of something is automatically expressing anti-American sentiment somehow...?

It stuck out like a sore thumb because the film itself struck me as very, very British - quite self-consciously so, I thought. Thus the title seemed like a sloppy mistake. Though esteefee's comment downthread may well be right in supposing that it was more likely a marketing decision.

(SA - oops, forgot to identify myself as OP in the comment above. Just in case it wasn't obvious.)
