I can't find a source for this, but I swear I saw a quote from the show's creator about why lesbian bears. Bears in Japanese news are portrayed as vicious monsters, but bears in Japanese fiction tend to be cute and friendly, and apparently the same is true for lesbians.

BTW, I highlt recommend The Mary Sue's recaps. They're completely baffled by this show.
