If someone has had their ARM DISLOCATED, they are not going to go jostling home in a vehicle, strip, shower, dress in pants *and* shirt, and *flop* onto a chair and then - and only then - tell their buddy to 'pop' their shoulder back in. It just does not work that way, holy fucking gods.

Also? TW fandom? I don't recall seeing one single person on there, with the possible exception of Mrs. McCall or the Sheriff, drink coffee. Please stop writing *every single character* as a shuffling zombie who cannot function without a Big Gulp-sized coffee in their belly. Please.

I'll see you that fic and I'll raise you a fic where a character was raped badly enough to NEED STITCHES and was then sexing it up with their hurt/comfort partner 24 hours later.

I knew it was going to be bad, but I didn't think it was going to be that bad.

I feel like we've seen Lydia with specialty coffee...but yeah, the degree to which so many stories have lines like "Don't talk to me until I've had my coffee!" is ridiculous.

Especially since in the case of teens, I think they would be more likely to drink a red bull or something.

It is! It happens in *so many fics*, across fandom, and it irritates me so much.

*Especially* when the character(s) don't drink coffee at all in canon and yet, suddenly, they can't even form coherent sentences? Stoppit.

Yeah, it bugs me too.

It's a relief to hear it's not just me who is baffled and annoyed!

As far as I know, isn't a shoulder dislocation one of the most painful things you can do to yourself?

It certainly seems to be. An author i like a lot used to be a steeplechase jockey in the UK. Over his career, he's dislocated a lot of joints and broken a lot of bones. He wrote about in a couple of his books (the jockey character got hurt) and yes - it sounds freaking agonizing.

Plus, we all should know now, by following the unfortunate tale of Jared Padalecki, just 'popping' the shoulder back in could mean a lot of complications and *surgery*, so - please don't do that.

What happened to JarPad snd is it why he wad immobilized at the start of season 10?

In my experience it's worse than breaking a bone. I can tell when something is broken and it hurts, but the adrenaline kicks in and I get it splinted or supported and go for an x-ray.

Dislocation is not the same. I could feel a breeze blowing on my arm and I was on the point of throwing up or passing out. Moving was just not a thing that was going to happen. I saw someone coming at me like they were going to touch it and they were treated to a verbal assault I didn't even know I was capable of. All the connective tissue being stretched and twisted and squished and torn is just very uncomfortable.

Arrgh!
That's exactly the jockey/author's experience.

Yeah, I've dislocated joints a lot and getting them back in place is always the first priority. I guess I could see trying to do other things first if you're nervous about just hurting yourself further if you try to pop it back in yourself and you need to clean yourself up before being able to go outside, but it doesn't sound like that was the case here. Trying to do that really is stressful if you're a worrier like me though. I'm so glad that my joints mostly just slip out for a second before straightening themselves out because having to force them back into place freaked me out.

Of course, everyone is different, but the jockey's character (and I'm sure his own experience) was basically - it's agonizing, touching it, moving, *breathing* is just all-consuming pain, so taking off clothes and showering would have been 100 percent out of the question.

In the fic it was more 'i'm pissed at you so i'm going to ignore you trying to help me, so there!'. Which...wow. No.

Every once in awhile I'll read a fic where Stiles doesn't like coffee, but yeah, fic has them drinking a lot of it. I know we've seen empty soda cans for Scott and Isaac but I can't remember anything else specific.

Of course, there's a lot of things that canon doesn't show us because they never develop characters or most storylines satisfactorily.

HA, yeah, just a little bit of that 'no development' thing.....

If I ever had a RL squick, dislocation would be that. Literally cannot think about anything other than the misplaced body part. It fucking HURTS but once everything is back in place it's sweaty relief with the cold shakes.

So I wouldn't buy your situation in a fic lol.

It's just a horrible thought, isn't it?

Respectfully disagree. With enough adrenaline in your system you can ignore most non-mortal wounds.

For example, I have been in a car accident which broke six ribs and I didn't realize I was even injured until half an hour later when suddenly I came down off my natural high and was like, "Oh wait. Waaaait. Yep, I broke something."

You can, sure. But when your arm is dangling uselessly and your buddy is all 'want me to fix that?' and you're a professional hero-type person, i gotta think that you *are* aware of the injury. Especially when you're snotty to your buddy about fixing it.

Your accident sounds awful. Glad you made it through!

With regards to the coffee, I can hand wave a lot of that because so many stories are set when the characters are older/in an AU. I know quite a lot of people who didn't like coffee until college required caffeine.

...I hate coffee though, so I never headcanon anyone as liking coffee.

This. I hate coffee, too, and i think my biggest issue with it is that it's just so *trite*. Oooh, zombie-until-coffee!! Never read *that* before.
Meh.

It's just...how could it *not*? Things! Things being pulled and stretched and twisted out of their natural spot!!!
