I'm the opposite, at least when it comes to books. I think it's because I'm not a super visual reader, so it takes a rare book to get me to cry. TV/film/anime etc can do it much easier.

I do totally get how big name actors can be distracting. The only really huge star I've found who is able to really disappear in a role is Meryl Streep (at least some of the time).
