I'm not big on the movies but I love a lot of the EU. Besides, I feel like as far as 'superfandoms' go Star Wars is not really that...active? You can always find someone to argue with you about lightsaber construction and there's plenty of fic out there, but if you're not into the canon it doesn't do you any good. You'd do better with a small active fandom you truly like, I'd think!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Wars will probably be super active once the new movie comes out, but yeah, it's not really active in a sense similar to, say, Sherlock, Supernatural, or Doctor Who.

And, same. The movies I don't mind for the most part (even if the OT is hideously overrated at this point), but I like the expanded universe stuff and the cartoons (Clone Wars and Rebels) a lot more. Maybe give at least those two series a shot if the movies aren't your thing, OP?

I don't think they're that good. The original three are some decent, well-structured entertainment with amazing special effects but the rest is shit, and it's never inspired me to the degree that I could get into the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the idea of making specific things like Star Wars the cornerstone of a subcultural group or an identity is pretty dumb. And I honestly find that interpretation of fandom pretty alienating despite the fact that I do like Star Wars and Harry Potter. I mean, they're just some things that I really, really like. They don't mean that I am basically the same as everyone else who really, really likes them.

So what I'm saying is, you do you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into either of those and I'm mostly annoyed. Especially about not being into HP, since I'm part of the HP-generation and everyone just assumes that I'm as into HP as they are. If I don't have to hear about what house everyone (RL and fictional) is ever again, I'll be happy. And no, I don't know my Hogwarts house, leave me be.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really think you need to be into either, there are a lot of large fandoms for various things, why not pick a fandom that is towards your interests? I don't like Star Wars or Harry Potter but I've been in all sorts of fandoms, some of them pretty huge.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to be in a super fandom? Small fandoms can be a lot of fun and are occasionally less drama prone.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think Star Wars and Harry Potter were just examples, and even as someone who was into the HP fandom (it's pretty quiet nowadays) I have to say, I feel OP. If you're not into a lot of current sci fi, you don't have a fandom. And it makes me feel left out too.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I understand that slightly because sometimes it's all Star Wars talk or all Harry Potter talk or all current popular thing talk and it's easy to get left out. But if you legitimately don't like something there's no reason to bother with it just to feel included (though if you haven't tried something and don't know if you like it, that's different and you can give it a try.)

...But there are still tons of geek things you can be into without being into the most popular fandom of the moment. Then it's just a matter of finding people who share those interests. Fandom is large as all hell and it's not exclusive to sci fi or fantasy.

There are other huge fandoms, though, where you wouldn't have to have SW or HP "geek cred". I mean what about Tolkien? Or Star Trek? Or one of the big video game franchises? There are a bunch of huge fandoms you could take part in.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So, what are you into?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming OP is speaking generally and doesn't literally just mean SW and HP. If I'm right, then I get it. The really frustrating thing is that finding a big fandom seems very... fleeting and by chance anymore. I got into Firefly, for instance, way too late to do anything overly fannish. All the Firefly fans I knew had moved on. Granted, Firefly's fandom was much smaller than HP and SW, but it was still fairly active.

There's a lot of major fandoms out there, so you'll probably find something you like. That said don't get too hung up about not liking Star Wars or whatever. If you find some area of geekery you like (SF, comics, video games, or what have you) you'll probably find other nerds who like what you're into, even if it's not the most popular thing.

Thanks! :D

I really like your icons, especially the one with sketchpad. Did you by chance make them?

your super fandom picks

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if OP wants to seek out that experience, why not. There's definitely some weird shit going on in them that you won't get in smaller fandoms.

the question is, what are some still big, active fandoms?

-MCU universe
-homestuck two years ago, lol
-Superwholock
-Disney movies
-Games of Throne
-LotR
-Sailor Moon?

Tumblr does a year in review, that's pretty good at gauging what's the most popular.

Dragon Age (BioWare in general?) and...does Teen Wolf still count? I have no idea.

I'm having trouble thinking of others, but I know there's more.

Big fandoms can be fun because of the massive amount of content created, but they can also be wanky and nasty. It really depends on where you hang out, who you follow, etc. That has never stopped me, but some people actually prefer smaller fandoms for the atmosphere. Maybe OP should try both, see which they enjoy more? Do what makes you happy; finding a fandom you love is more important than finding a popular one. (Though I can see where finding a popular one that you also love might be preferable.)

General gaming fandom, Final Fantasy and Nintendo/Zelda would be big ones.

Anime fandom will always be around. General anime fandom tends to require keeping up with new anime though, so if you only like specific series keep to those.

I thought it was a Star Trek vs Star Wars deal among sifi fans. There's also Star Gate.
HP and SW are geared to all ages. Maybe you can try the Game of Thrones? It's pretty gritty.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I like Star Wars just fine (well, the old movies) and I enjoyed reading Harry Potter years ago... but now I'm getting into the book part of tumblr and the HP worship is seriously starting to irk me. It's really not that deep. Not that I don't enjoy some good meta, but there it's the bestest thing to have ever bested.

Eh, super fandoms can be overrated. I like the medium sized ones myself.

I love Star Wars, but I'm okay with those that don't like it. However, there are other things to consider, if you want to join a big fandom:

- Video Games (Metal Gear Solid, Bioshock series, anything by Bioware, Resident Evil, Pokemon, Street Fighter, Persona/Shin Megami Tensei series, Tales of series)
- Marvel Cinematic Universe
- James Bond
- LotR
- Once Upon a Time
- Sleepy Hollow
- Game of Thrones
- Hannibal
- Musical Theatre (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Elisabeth, Chicago, anything by Stephen Sondheim, Hedwig, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder are huge musical fandoms atm)
- DC Comics
- Disney/Pixar
- Sailor Moon
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica
- Evangelion
- Tokyo Ghoul
- Attack on Titan
- Sports Anime (Prince of Tennis, Haikyuu!!, Slam Dunk, Eyeshield 21, Kuroko no Basuke, Free! and Daiya no Ace are very trendy right now. Yes, I am aware Free! is not a sports anime per se, but yeah)

I hope you'll find something to join in, OP!

There's still a big Prince of Tennis western fandom? Huh.

Text: I feel left out of geekdom because I don’t like Star Wars.

I’m not a huge fan of Harry Potter either I just want to be able to join one of the super fandoms. I’m working my way through all of them now.
