I think it's a difference between book-fen and show-fen. Like Game of Thrones people who are mainly interested in the books are like "Eww, Jorah Mormont," whereas show people are like "HELL yes you charming bastard, I ship it so hard". Graham McTavish is a sexy sexy Scottish man-bear with a sexy Scottish beard and a sexy Scottish voice, and wanting to see more of him in a romantic context is totally reasonable in my book.

Seconding the Graham McTavish love. He is a joy to watch and is perfectly cast.

Have you ever read his twitter feed? That man brightens my day.

I will third it. Dwalin is cool and I almost squealed when I found out he voice Arl Eamon Guerrin.

Nah. I've read all the books and Jorah Mormont in those is by far superior to the show version. He's one of my favorite characters in the books.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
He's certainly much more interesting than the actual love interest. And acts better too.

Haha, yeah. I remember when I first read the books, I was like JORAH, NO. And now that I've become more of a show fan, I'm like "Y HALO THAR IAIN GLEN."

Of course, I also first read the books about eight years ago, so there's the aging factor involved.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
In the books, I find Duncan kinda repulsive, but in the show, JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-24 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, that was almost exactly my reaction to show Jorah vs. book Jorah. I thought he was so attractive in the show and shipped him and Dany, then read the books and was like "...No." I haven't watched the show since S2 but as hot as he was and had chemistry with Dany, the books made me not ship them.

But Iain can get it.

Okay I haven't read the books, but aren't all of Claire's relationships different levels of fucked up? I recall reading even Jaime kind of sucks.

I find show Dougal interesting so I don't blame you. I'd actually rather spend more time with him then Jaime.

I gave up on the books around the third or fourth one, which is like eight zillion pages in because they're so damn long, but Jamie had some very definite Gary Stu tendencies that have apparently only gotten worse. Gabaldon is deeply, worshipfully in love with him, so most of the other characters are, too. I barely remember book Dougal and couldn't get into the show, but agree about show Dougal. Way hotter and more interesting, even though the whole Sexy Highlander thing kind of escapes me otherwise, lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the whole Claire/Jamie thing has issues too, but the fandom will never, ever see it. Gabaldon herself is clearly infatuated, so anything he does is rationalized away because omg sexy highlander!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do not worry OP, I've only watched the show, and I just want to see her with Dougal. I feel like it could be such a contentious relationship. Jaime is cute and all, learning the ways from her, but damn, I really could see her and Dougal. And it would not be an easy relationship, but I do think they'd understand each other better than Jaime understands her. UGH. I just want them together.

Word, Jamie is still a boy on some level, while Dougal is a full-grown man.

Like, I know the show won't deviate from the books that much to hook Claire and Dougal up even for a moment, but I would be happy with a dream sequence.

I follow Graham McTavish on Twitter and he recently posted pictures of himself rock climbing, and the man is FIT.

A dream sequence love scene with shirtless Dougal, please God, be merciful and let me have this.

C and J are a great couple. But Dougal is a more interesting character than Jaimie.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear, this is the third time I've seen a secret about shipping these two. Not that this is a repeat, but OP - you should start asking around, as you're CLEARLY not the only one who likes this pairing.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Your friend sounds like a dick, but then I'm not keen on people who are so into their precious ships that they have to proselytize. Besides, Graham McTavish is hot and I don't blame you.

that sounds annoying. :/

I bring you fics

I've been enjoying these, OP:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/2417537/chapters/5347790 (AU where Claire steps through the stones and meets Dougal rather than Jamie, still WIP though)

http://archiveofourown.org/works/2379758?view_adult=true (TW: dubcon)

http://archiveofourown.org/works/2340794/chapters/5160182 (WIP that seems to be edging toward a Claire/Jamie/Dougal threesome starting with voyeurism)

I haven't seen the show but I've read most of the books, and shipping Claire with Dougal is 100% appropriate IMHO.

Your friend sounds crazy.

Sorry to say, because the show (esp with Diana Gabaldon as a consultant) will probably never ever go there, but I totally love the strange relationship between these two.

Like, even putting shipping them aside, it's interesting that the show makes him creep hard on her and stand by stoically while Jamie is tortured, while also showing him to be capable of great feeling and compassion and gentleness (like when he comforted his clansman as he died).

I don't know, man, he's the most interesting character in the whole show to me.

Plus the man is smoking hot. Never knew I could dig a 50-something bald man with a beard so very much, yet here we are.

Image: Claire and Dougal, with a Paint-style heart drawn between them

Text: A friend of mine begged and begged me to watch Outlander before the rest of the series airs.

So I did.

And I told her that I ship these two (because I do) and she practically gave me a sermon on why this is wrong and Claire and Jamie are the Best Couple Ever.

And she’s since brought it up multiple times, and I felt bad for…I don’t know…HORRIFYING her with my love for Dougal and Claire.

So I told her she’d convinced me of the error of my ways, so tht she’d be at peace.

But I lied.
