Not-Mindless action movies!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I love me a thoughtless explosion fest as much as any popcorn-muncher, but what I REALLY like are action movies that have some more care put into them. Ones with some self awareness, some humor, some heart, that don't make me go "OH COME ON" every five minutes. Mostly when I want to scratch this itch I watch me some Indiana Jones of some Mummy movies, but I know there's more! What are your favorites?

Off the top of my head, a lot of your better gangster and crime movies fall into that category. Especially Hong Kong gang movies, yakuza films, etc. Although I guess that's a different kind of mindfulness than you're referring to, because it's less about humor and awareness and heart, and more about serious drama I guess.

Well, I love Pulp Fiction, but I imagine that's one of those things everyone has watched.

I think Black Book with Carice van Houten is very nice. It's a film about WWII and the Holocaust that's got lots of action and moral ambiguity. I haven't seen a lot of works that would touch on the not-so-nice aspects of the Allies' behaviour when they come to Germany; so I like this one.

anything by Tarantino, really.
also Boardwalk Empire, if we're talking not-mindless action TV shows as well as movies.

John Carpenter movies! Especially Big Trouble In Little China. I mean, the plot of the movie actually makes almost no sense, but it still has an enormous amount of heart and it's really witty and good. And his other movies are mostly the same way, to one degree or another. Is They Live kind of an absurd movie about two guys punching the shit out of a bunch of aliens? Yes. But it's also really clearly drawing from a real concern with individual people and a broader critique of society. Gosh I love John Carpenter.

Also, really, most Harrison Ford movies.

Aww, yeah. I particularly liked that bit where J has to recruit a new agent, and one of the guys he chooses turns out to have a horrible case of the hero syndrome. It was so unexpectedly meaningful.

(and I friend-ship K and J like there's no tomorrow. So lots of heartwarming potential, too.)

I love Men in Black. Still forever disappointed that little Tiffany isn't part of the Universal ride.

John Wick? I really enjoyed it and I think it had a lot of heart.

Reviews for 16 Blocks were all over the map, but I loved it for three reasons:

1): the protagonist does everything he can to avoid killing cops

2): the guy he's protecting turns out to be a surprisingly complex character

3): the villain is creepily reasonable and seems to think he's a good person doing what's necessary

I also liked the prison movie In Hell. It's a little broad, but it has a strong moral center, and even though it can be brutal, the violence didn't seem gratuitous to me.

You mentioned the Mummy movies. Have you watched The Scorpion King? It's kind of goofy, but it's pretty self aware and I thought it was obvious that the actors had fun with it.

There's also Romancing the Stone, which is great.

Children of Men
28 Days Later (you might find this more horror than action but I found it more action than horror)
Black Hawk Down
Zero Dark Thirty
John Wick
The Mummy (1 and 2)
Conan The Barbarian (fantasy epic action but it still counts imo)
Elysium (this is divisive, but I still found it pretty good)
Edge Of Tomorrow

That should cover a pretty wide range of genres for you.

Edit: Oops. Didn't read the whole comment and just started posting. Didn't see you already said you'd seen The Mummy.

I just realized I forgot Attack The Block.

I am so remiss. SO remiss.

Definitely seconding Attack the Block. I found it somewhere deep within the bowels of my Roku, and absolutely do not regret watching it at all. Best movie I've seen in a loooooong time, and I usually give up on movies after about ten minutes in, these days.

I loved Children of Men. If you haven't yet, I'd recommend the book too.

What's it called, like the Librarian or something? Someone help?

I haven't actually seen the Librarian movies, but I loved the Librarians series. (They got a second season, yay!)

District B-13. I cite it to people as an example of how to properly write a fight scene.

Master and Commander. Age of Sail, featuring a Royal Navy captain and a doctor-scientist, on a voyage around Cape Horn in pursuit of a powerful French frigate. The details are right, the action convincing, the cinematography wonderful and the acting excellent.

True Lies

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (not sure if it's really in the genre you're asking for, but it's not that far beyond something like Indiana Jones.)

I love action movies.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
But sometimes mindless can be in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes different people take different things from the same movie.

Galaxy Quest - Action comedy, loving parody/homage to Star Trek
The Bourne Trilogy - Smart action
Inception - Twisty drama entwined with action
Aliens - Action horror
Terminator - Action love story with a sci-fi center
The Fugitive - Action mystery
The Matrix - Digital-age fairy tale action
The Fifth Element - Sci-fi action with a surprising amount of heart
The Goonies - Action adventure comedy
Die Hard - I know, I know, but it has all these little moments interspersed throughout the action - humor, family drama, friendship, etc.
