I feel I'm going to get dogpiled for this, but - is there a chance this is just the go-to excuse for those who ship Steve with Bucky or Tony or someone else? At least partly, for some people?

In which case, OP - it really doesn't have anything to do with Sharon's family ties. If it wasn't that, they'd have another reason all lined up to dislike it.

(I'm just having a similar situation in another fandom in which a pairing has just hooked-up, and those who don't like it are OUTRAGED, OUTRAGED I tell you that it involves adultery -- even though their preferred pairing is equally dodgy in many respects. You can tell they don't really care; it's just a legitimate-sounding reason to complain).

It might play a part (I mean, I can't rule it out for some people).

But I HATE Steve/Howard that transitions to Steve/Tony for the same reason.

And it's super fucking frustrating to try to find Steve/Howard fic because so MUCH of it has Steve/Tony.

I'd really like to avoid Steve/Sharon being canon for the same reason --> because I can't help but find it super-squicky.

SA

I also have to admit -- I don't want it to happen because if Steve got with Sharon knowing she's Peggy's niece, I would think less of him. And I love Steve and don't want something like that to mar my love for him.

Da

I would love more Steve/Howard where Howard finds him - but it doesn't devolve into Steve/underage Tony and squicky Howard/Tony.

Me too.

Especially since Howard told Peggy he felt the same way about Steve in Agent Carter. I doubt it was intentional, but it definitely made my interest in the pairing spike.

"The Family I Never Asked For" is GREAT at exploring this. Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/503547

Tony's reaction is also hyper-realistic to me. He had a crush on Cap as a kid that now just totally creeps him out knowing Cap and his dad were lovers.

Yeah, I think I had this conversation with an anon about a week ago (stop tagging your fics with pairings that only happen in the first chapter and only dissolve to make room for your main pairing, people) and it's still annoying to think about. :\

is there a chance this is just the go-to excuse for those who ship Steve with Bucky or Tony or someone else? At least partly, for some people?

You could as easily turn that around and say, is there a chance this is just the go-to dismissal of dislike of the ship for people who ship Steve with Sharon? At least partly, for some people?

Shippers are always looking for reasons to dismiss dislike of their ship as just resulting from people shipping something else.

I don't know what the other show is that you're talking about, but I know that there's one show I watch where I was mostly ok with a certain ship until the guy's presumed-to-be-dead wife turned up. And then I was very much "no no no HELL no" and it had nothing to do with shipping an opposing ship, because I don't. Sometimes reasons are simply what they're stated to be, and I get tired of shippers dismissing arguments against their ship as "oh you just don't like them because you ship someone else", since most of the time in my case I actually don't.

Nah, it honestly does squick me out. I don't expect my ship to be played out on the screen, but at this point i pretty much prefer Steve single, or really anyone else than Sharon.

Swan Queen vs. Outlaw Queen?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-23 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, Reign

CA: TFA came out, what, four years ago? I didn't start shipping Cap with anyone until just a month ago, and in fact have strongly dislike Steve/Tony for the last four years, which is not a popular position to occupy in MCU fandom. And yet I remember at the end of the first film thinking, "Obviously Steve/Peggy isn't going to happen now, I wonder who they'll have him get with in these movies," then looking up the comic possibilities and being pretty horrified.

Sounds like you're trying to make a legit complaint less legit by pinning it on ship wars. Sorry people think a canon ship has creepy writing.
