Apparently, there's a punishment in the military known as the "buttstroke."

It's not what you think, but HOMOEROTICISM AWAY at the name.

It's hitting someone with the buttstock of the rifle. VERY common offensive move that is commonly used to discipline soldiers and new recruits (besides its obvious applications in actual fighting).

There's some great toilet grafitti in the ladies loos at my local. Currently there is an extended and vicious argument about existentialism taking part on the back of the lefthand (broken) loo door.

Old graffiti found in the bathroom in the history/linguistics/Slavic-Germanic studies wing of one of my old campus buildings:

We have an anonymous "overheard at my uni" Facebook thing and I read the best exchange ever on it and I will now translate it for you as my friends and I still laugh when we mention it to each other and it is like a year old:

Student 1: "Shit, I did a law-student this weekend, should I get checked or?"
Student 2: "Yes, you know those law-boys, the lawbook under their arms at any time, but they can't keep track of their STDs."

And as I had to actually find that one to translate it, I also found this:

Student 1 writing about Bosnia "oh, I am so frustrated"
Student 2: What is it now?
Student 1: It is so stressful to write about this stupid country ...which I come from."

translating this I learnt that either English don't have gendered words for "Student" or I don't know them, also a words for a classmate in higher education, or do you still call it classmates? Directly translated from Norwegian it would be With-Student...

Nope, there are no gendered terms for student in English. In Britain, 'coursemate' was used at my Uni to refer to someone else on the same course. IDK whether that's a common thing though, or if other English speaking countries use it.

Interesting, we don't use the gendered student terms often in Norwegian, nor the gendered terms for teacher and such, we just use the "masculine" form, but it makes it easier when telling a story as you can be precise about gender without having to say more than like one more letter. Coursemate is weirdly enough the direct translation of the word you use for classmates in 1-13th grade in Norwegian.

Anyway thank you for taking the time to explain it to me!

Oh and another question, is student used for both higher ed. and for 1-13th grade? Or do you have different words for it, I know pupil I am just not sure if you use them interchangeably or if it is a UK/US English thing, or if it has a divide like the two Norwegian words.

Hmm... That's a tricky question. Just so I'm being clear in my terms here, the school system in the UK goes:

Primary school (Year 1 - Year 6)
Secondary/High school (Year 7 - Year 11)
College or Sixth Form (I'm guessing this is equivalent to Norweigian 12th and 13th grades?)
University

Sorry if you already knew that, just wanted to be sure I wasn't being confusing with terminology.

Okay, so I can't speak for the US, but in the UK 'pupil' is more common for people attending up until Secondary school. It would also get used for Sixth Forms I think. However, the term 'pupil' has quite an old fashioned feel to it, and I get the impression that 'student' is slowly replacing it. In the same way that Secondary school is slowly becoming High school (although that's also because of American media).

Student* - For Higher Education Then the female version is "Studinne", but it really isn't used that much, just like the female version of friend, only when needed.

20 years ago no one in Higher Education would dream of calling themselves an "Elev" now we are more relaxed, but "I am a Student as I study" and you wouldn't use that expression for anyone not in Higher Education, they learn not study. Just like I don't "go to school", "I study" or "go to Name Of Uni" or "Study whichever degree you are getting". It is getting less strict and there are some overlap between High School and Uni (as we do Trade School at the same age as High School)

No wonder we learnt pupil in school then, as they taught us the completely useless "International English" which only exists in books and is pretty much made up of UK English, just not always the modern or most common words.

I am familiar with the British Education system, we even learnt why you call the school you pay for Public schools instead of Private schools in a lecture not to long ago. But not familiar enough to know exactly which term you use for which age group. We do High School from either 11th to 13th grade or 11 and 12th grade if you take the Trade School route. And junior high from 8th to 10th grade, while Primary school is 1st to 7th grade. (tho only 1st to 10th grade is required by law, up to year 13 is not mandatory, but you are guaranteed a spot in a program, then Uni we all and we all have the same scholarship/loan system)

In the U.S. "classmate" can mean a few things - it can mean someone literally in one or more of your classes, or it can mean someone who is in the same year as you graduating from the same institution. People use it from kindergarten all the way up through grad school.
