Re: Petty reasons for giving up on or not trying out a show, book, movie, or whatever

Other than Hype Aversion, already mentioned, if the author/director/lead actor has dodgy political views then I just cannot bring myself to give them my money. Anti-vaxxers, homophobes, radical gun rights, anti-choice, Clint Eastwoodian, scary pro American/Manifest destiny, or racist creators of any kind. I know people say that the work should be seperate from the creator, but even if the creator is a hard-right nutter and they produce a workable communist manifesto that could reform the world, I still could not bring myself to put my cash down in the knowledge that even a few pennies might go to support their right-wing lifestyles. Well, not until they are dead anyway. I can finally watch Charlton Heston films, because I got his guns now.

For me it depends on if the creator is defended. I feel icky about watching Roman Polanski movies because of all the people who defend him so it feels like an ongoing conversation and I don't want to feel like I'm supporting him in any way, but I also happen to be reading a book by Anne McCaffrey right now despite her infamy and it doesn't feel the same to me because her statements are widely condemned and that makes it easier for me to separate the work from the author.
