I agree. Most of his stuff really isn't *scary*. I found bits of The Stand a little unsettling, but not *scary*. I do like Carrie and The Dead Zone a lot, but otherwise, his books tend to be a little weird, to ramble, and his woman characters are kinda uck. (Well, i liked Dolores Clairbourne).

I can't really think of written stuff that's *scary*, though Tanith Lee has written some very neat horror stories. Her 'Red as Blood, or Tales of the Sisters Grimmer' are good, as well as The Secret Books of Paradys (set in an alternate version of Paris) which has some creepy moments. Good luck!

I heard such good things about Dolores Clairbourne's character but I tried reading that book and I just couldn't do it. Nothing but dialect with no breaks of any kind that I saw? I didn't care enough to deal with that.

I don't remember it well enough, now, to say yes or no, but i just liked her. Her non-nonsense way of going about life, her determination and, of course, her getting rid of the stupid husband. Yay! THAT was creepy, when she was out running around in the eclipse.

The movie is good, as well, mostly because Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason-Leigh are awesome.

SK is *notoriously* bad at writing women characters. Which is pretty much why I just cannot with him anymore.
