Unless it's the same person doing the recommending over and over again (in which case, shut that person down), I think you're shit outta luck. Stephen King's too popular for you not to get recommendations.

Try Michaelbrent Collings.

I'd like to know what kind of horror OP enjoys. Perhaps someone in this thread can rec him or her material?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I never got into Stephen King. It seems like he goes for "random nonsense horrible death thing" a lot.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a King fan either.

Have you tried signing up for Goodreads? You can teach it to customize recs.

Yeah I agree with you. Well at least about the writing I have never gotten far enough to find out if it's scary or not

Misery is one of my favorite books but I'm not fond of Stephen King in general. Definitely not my ideal for horror.

Sympathis completely, OP. I hate Neil Gaiman and have the same problem.

I find Stephen King better at short stories than long involved things (The Long Walk is absolutely one of my favourites of his especially because there's no Big Bad. There's no monster under the bed. It's just people being terrible and somehow that's scarier to me).

I probably wouldn't even recommend King because I would assume that someone who's into Horror already heard about/read some books by him (or tried to, at least).

I'd recommend signing up for BookBub: they have a horror category, I think, and you'd get daily emails with links to free/cheap e-books.

(Granted, a good percentage will be in the meh-to-blah category, but hey, free.)

House of Leaves, maybe?

Quit while you're ahead, OP. King's work is pure pulp and easy to read so he has a lot of fans, but it's pretty much the same shit over and over with the same self-insert main character over and over and his same annoying wife over and over...

I read about seven of those before I came to realize this and just stopped.

You are incorrect, Pet Sematery is terrifying. I threw that book against the wall.

I feel your pain. I get irrationally angry when people recommend Game of Thrones for the fantasy fiction genre. I can't escape the series, and I actively hate it. But what do you do, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it truly that difficult to ask people for horror novels recs that aren't Stephen King?

If you don't mind more old school horror, I recommend M.R. James.

This secret has just made me aware that while I love horror GAMES, I don't really read many horror STORIES. (Even though I write a few.)

The Book of Lost Things, I think, is pretty good and creepy, even if it's more fantasy. It's about a kid getting sucked into a fantasy patchwork world made of a kludge of all his favorite books. Unfortunately, he liked the GRIM kind of fairy tale...

I agree. Most of his stuff really isn't *scary*. I found bits of The Stand a little unsettling, but not *scary*. I do like Carrie and The Dead Zone a lot, but otherwise, his books tend to be a little weird, to ramble, and his woman characters are kinda uck. (Well, i liked Dolores Clairbourne).

I can't really think of written stuff that's *scary*, though Tanith Lee has written some very neat horror stories. Her 'Red as Blood, or Tales of the Sisters Grimmer' are good, as well as The Secret Books of Paradys (set in an alternate version of Paris) which has some creepy moments. Good luck!

I really like his shorter-form stuff, not so much his novels. I need to get another copy of Different Seasons, actually, I lost my copy in a move some years ago.

Have you read 'The Association'? I think that one's a Bentley Little... I can't remember the title of the one that horrified me even more, and I don't seem to have it on hand, but it might be 'The Summoning'.

Anyway, if you're not a fan of King, you can try grabbing a short story collection with a group of different horror authors and see whose style you do like before committing to a novel!

I like Clive Barker OP!

I recently found out Steven King set one of his horror movies in Chicopee and I laughed. Such a random crappy town to pick, I guess I can see it

Text: I’m always looking for horror novels, but it’s really annoying when the same author is recommended every time. I just don’t like his stories. I’ve tried several of them, they’re not scary or fun to read.

For a horror book rec, John Dies At the End scared the shit out of me.

Like, every review I see talks about how "LOL funny" it is, but it legitimately made me afraid of the dark D|
