Echoing the whole start slow thing.

I'm in a similar boat as you OP, what with trying to be fit while being ill. One thing I remember a very active teacher told me once in high school is: Warm up.

Like even if you're doing something as simple as a walk, he told us it was imperative you warmed up your body before starting your routine. My brother has told me this a bunch of times too and he's a regular gym goer.

(Also this thread is relevant to my interest, not just because I'm slowly trying to get into better shape but also because I'm currently writing about an athlete trying to get fit again after suffering a game-ending injury.)
