Exercise advice

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi FS. Can anyone offer me some advice? What I really need is some confirmation of whether or not I'm going in the right direction. :/

Basically, I've been ill for a long time and put on a lot of weight. I'm now taking up exercise again but seem to be really injury prone. So, I'm planning on taking a month to focus just on low impact sports like swimming and yoga, before trying to take on higher impact sports again (running, weights).

Does this sound like a good plan? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Any advice appreciated.

Just don't overdo swimming and yoga. You can overdo those too, you know.

Actually, I've been so focused on trying to shift the weight it hadn't occurred to me. Thanks for the reminder! Think I'll have to take it more carefully than I was planning.

Yeah, seriously OP, a couple times after yoga, I was sore all over and had trouble sitting and standing. Just because it's low-impact doesn't mean it can't fuck you up!

Seconding this. Yoga isn't actually a "relaxing" form of exercise - if done incorrectly, the stretches can cause bad injuries. It's more like something for already-fit people to do.

Swimming is a good alternative, though.

To be perfectly honest, the best thing you can do for yourself is just ...go for a short walk with someone. After being ill there are a whole lot of systems that are out of wack, and if you do inadvertently collapse you don't want to be in a pool while you're at it.

Yoga might be all right depending on whether or not you've had surgery recently. If you have, it's not generally recommended. It's low impact, yes, but it's a lot more intense than people imagine it to be. Hence why starting out with a low intensity, low impact activity (like walking) is the best way to safely build up endurance and strength after illness.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Yeah, I think I need to scale it back at least to begin with. I was originally planning a swimming/yoga/swimming/yoga/swimming/day off approach. Think I'll replace most of that with short walks to start with and see how I go.

No surgery, but I am expecting yoga to be more intense than it used to be.

Do you think a couple of weeks of short walks every day and then start to up the ante? Maybe increase the walk length on alternate days and then slowly introduce yoga/swimming?

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Do what you can without pushing yourself so far you're above a pain level of 5 or you begin feeling faint. That's my best advice there, honestly.

Recovery is hard and feeling weak is probably the most demoralizing part, so I know there's a big temptation to push yourself, but just remember that if you injure yourself you'll only be back to square one. Good luck.

could i suggest tai chi instead of yoga? it's more gentle if that's what you're going for

Re: Exercise advice

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I would prefer to be doing Tai Chi, but there's only one class in the entire city and I can't afford it, as it's considerably more expensive than my yoga classes would be. Plus you can only purchase blocks of classes and I can't commit to a class every week because I still get bad days.

Thank you though, anon. I wish I could!

do you feel your learning style (learning anything in general, i mean) absolutely requires attending classes?

because i'm learning from william c. chen's book of 60 moves, and then double check the moves on youtube and it seems to be working even though i was terrible at anything requiring spacial coordination:

Youtube videos.

You're lucky you gained weight, I'll tell you why: I dropped weight, when I was sick, and I'm going into my 2nd year now, still trying to come back from it. :-P (Had a bad reaction to the antibiotics.)

Swimming is a great start, and I'd try walking on the treadmill, too (a bit brisk walk, if you can). Then, when you feel more comfortable, speed the treadmill up to a jog for shorter bursts (even just a minute), then go back to walking. You can slowly build yourself up without going too fast. Yoga isn't going to make you lose weight, but it can help your flexibility, which might reduce the number of injuries you get.

Also, how about cycling? Or an elliptical? I think those are supposed to be easier on the joints than a treadmill, and you can still go at whatever pace is comfortable for you.

This is obvious, but look at your diet, too. I don't think you'll see results by walking/swimming alone if you eat a lot of junk.

Re: Exercise advice

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, anon! Will try out your walking/jogging idea. Yeah, I've found yoga completely useless at shifting weight in the past. I'm sticking with it thought to try and reduce my injury proneness.

I don't eat any junk currently (oh man I miss cake), I cut it all out when I became unable to exercise. Unfortunately, it's not prevented my weight gain as I've had to keep up my calories as I've been healing a lot and fighting infection. :/

Much appreciated.

That sounds good!

If you're going to a gym, they've got these gentle-on-leg machines to simulate running/walking but without the stress of your feet landing. idk what they're called.

I'll have to check those out, anon. Thanks!

Everybody here is giving you good advice. The best thing you can do is pick something. Swimming, yoga, walking, whatever.

I'll also add that riding a bike is great for losing weight and making you feel good too. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, iceyred! Yes, lots for me to think about on this thread. :)

Bikes, ah I love bikes but I'm so scared of them. The bike lanes are *awful* in my city, and a number of my friends have been injured/knocked off their bikes. Luckily, not seriously.

Thank you for the advice!

Re: Exercise advice

Sounds reasonable, though you should add "walking" to low impact exercises and make sure you're doing it for a long enough period to make a difference, say, 30 minutes minimum. You also have to address diet issues, because exercise likely will not be enough.

Hey OP! I'm a former starver/overexerciser, and I joined a gym a few months ago, which was very exciting and nerveracking!

My main advice would be (donated by my husband, who is much better about these things than I am) is, START SLOW. Seriously, you've been sick a long time. You're probably going to be frail. Start low, and keep your expectations modest. You can't just leap into swimming a mile three times a week.

Also, make it something you ENJOY. If you don't enjoy it, it's only a matter of time before you quit. (That, or you will be doing something you don't enjoy forever. Yech.)

Also endorsing the swimming. I have a grandma who's 88 and her main form of exercise is getting into her community's pool and doing stretches/exercises/the like. She complains about how weak and flabby she is, but honestly for 88, she's in GREAT shape, and I think the pool exercises really help that.

Not that I am saying you're decrepit or anything! But rather injury prone-ness shouldn't be an issue with swimming, if that makes sense.

Echoing the whole start slow thing.

I'm in a similar boat as you OP, what with trying to be fit while being ill. One thing I remember a very active teacher told me once in high school is: Warm up.

Like even if you're doing something as simple as a walk, he told us it was imperative you warmed up your body before starting your routine. My brother has told me this a bunch of times too and he's a regular gym goer.

(Also this thread is relevant to my interest, not just because I'm slowly trying to get into better shape but also because I'm currently writing about an athlete trying to get fit again after suffering a game-ending injury.)
