Next time, OP, don't use dark text to write on a dark background. The secret is almost ineligible. Rather make the canvas bigger than the picture giving you room at the top and bottom to write your secret.

Personally, I do think the subtext is so strong I view it as basically canon, in that I think they're in love with each other (though not together, it's all ust), and I think that it was likely intended to be viewed that way. But yeah, not the same sort of canon as Ed/Winry, and you can definitely that their feelings are strong but platonic.

This is also what I understand to be the case according to Word of God. But I also suspect/headcanon that even if it wasn't, they'd still find some excuse not to be together (at least before/during the course of the series) out of a possibly-subconscious sense of "I have too much to atone for; I can't let myself be distracted from fixing everything by being happy."

I honestly really like it that we don't know for sure what exactly what their relationship consists of. It's one of those relationships where a good fan writer can make me buy any version of them.

I have to say about the frat reg thing though . . . they're pretty much constantly committing treason in their spare time, it beggars belief to me that regulations would stop them. Also, regs like that would kill half the ships in this canon but it's only Roy/Riza that this gets cited for.

(I personally took the so-called word-of-god as a way of avoiding the question)

Anon above, and this is a big part of my 'they're using it as an excuse' headcanon. Also, I love having it phrased as 'committing treason in their spare time.' I want to see that listed in Roy's profile on a dating site or as his little banter-y fun fact on a game show.

Yeah tho I feel like it's so far down the list of possible excuses/rationalizations they don't even need it. I mean, it's a fanon thing that's not even mentioned in the series ya know?

And if Roy tried to bring it up, Riza would raise an eyebrow & be like 'now you care about regs?'

What's the obsession with 'canon' anyways?

Sometimes I think people worry so much about their ship being canon because they either view romantic love as the pinnacle of all love or they are too insecure about their ships actual relationship and need to become canon in order to validate everything.

I mostly agree with this but I think (?) OOP is just talking about the thing where fanon/ head canon becomes so pervasive, you forget the scene of the characters kissing or declaring their love actually happened. Also this is kind of a weird fandom in the sense that the main 'canon' ship doesn't actually become 'official' until the end of a many thanks ear run (does Ed/Winry even happen definitively in the 2003 anime? And it's not unreasonable to expect the same thing might happen with Royai.

The mangaka herself commented on their relationship, saying the reason why they couldn't get married was because of the law against marriage in the military. This was the only reason she gave. One would assume she would have said, "They don't feel that way about each other" if we weren't supposed to consider their romantic feelings canon.

The thing I saw was 'they can't get married because of regs' but maybe I saw it out of context. Seemed like a dodge of whether they WOULD if they could (and whether anything would go on if they weren't married)
