What's the obsession with 'canon' anyways?

Sometimes I think people worry so much about their ship being canon because they either view romantic love as the pinnacle of all love or they are too insecure about their ships actual relationship and need to become canon in order to validate everything.

I mostly agree with this but I think (?) OOP is just talking about the thing where fanon/ head canon becomes so pervasive, you forget the scene of the characters kissing or declaring their love actually happened. Also this is kind of a weird fandom in the sense that the main 'canon' ship doesn't actually become 'official' until the end of a many thanks ear run (does Ed/Winry even happen definitively in the 2003 anime? And it's not unreasonable to expect the same thing might happen with Royai.
