I'm curious, why do you find the idea of God morally repugnant?

Well, I'm not terribly original in this regard. I hate the notion that an omniscient caring, loving God could exist in a world so full of pointless suffering.

I should probably note that I don't have any sort of moral issue with indifferent/impersonal/less caring gods.

Well, I agree with that, and I'm not (as is pretty obvious from my original comment) saying that rejecting religion is a generally good idea.

My mind doesn't work like this, though. I can't choose whether to be religious or not. I see the evil around me, and I see the moral problem with saying that an omniscient loving God exists, and I can draw only one conclusion from these two premises.

(all the logical issues with religious beliefs aside).

Not who you replied to but reminds me of the Epicurean Paradox:

β€œIs God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?”

-Epicurus (classical philosopher, 3rd/4th century BCE)

What isn't morally repugnant about the idea of an all powerful, supposedly merciful God who lets innocent people suffer? I don't buy the idea that suffering and death is necessary somehow, which is how most believers try to rationalize that. If something that depended upon me were suffering and I could ease its pain with a snap of my fingers, I'd do it. If I just stood by and let it suffer, and people would rightfully question whether or not I was a monster. Why would anyone hold God to lower standards than they'd hold an ordinary person with very limited powers?
