Honestly? Just start with the most recent stuff and work your way backwards. I know what you mean about off-putting male design, but a lot of that is just the 90's and their leftover influence. Take a look at the latest Hawkeye stuff, as well as series geared away from the "typical" comic-demographic of annoying fanboys straight men (i.e. Ms. Marvel, Young Avengers, etc.) Also take a look at comics of other characters you may not care for, see if there's an art style you like, and then find other works by those artists. :)
