Would anyone have any recommendations?

I've tried browsing a number of styles but it seems to range from horrific to just off-putting. I'd settle for tolerable, to be honest.

It's funny, because I saw gifs of the film that someone had edited to look like a comic book and thought they were great.

I would be really interested in seeing those gifs!

They were on imgur. I'll see if I can dig them up but it could take a little while.

Argh

I can't find them.

I'll keep looking but it was similar to this (though animated): http://media2.giphy.com/media/DXzoI782ph3ji/200_s.gif

And it was the scene where Steve first encounters the Winter Soldier and tosses the shield at him.

Here's the whole Avengers one animated: http://observationdeck.io9.com/awesome-comic-panel-sequence-of-the-avengers-1417907766

There is one for The Winter Soldier, but I can't find it. >:(

Oh, OP, plenty of comics don't look terrible like the one in your secret. Cap certainly didn't look on steroids before the 90s, for example. But I'm afraid I'm not really a Cap fan so it's hard to rec things. That said, everyone always praises Brubaker's Cap run so let me point you to Captain America v5.

Honestly? Just start with the most recent stuff and work your way backwards. I know what you mean about off-putting male design, but a lot of that is just the 90's and their leftover influence. Take a look at the latest Hawkeye stuff, as well as series geared away from the "typical" comic-demographic of annoying fanboys straight men (i.e. Ms. Marvel, Young Avengers, etc.) Also take a look at comics of other characters you may not care for, see if there's an art style you like, and then find other works by those artists. :)

Captain America: The New Deal. Superb run, collected in one volume. Controversial post-9/11 terrorism storyline, with art by the superb John Cassaday.
