It sucks when you just can't get past the art style of something you want to read, but it happens sometimes.

To be fair, that art is specifically awful and it DOES differ a lot from comic to comic. But year, I get it - the macho art was one of the things that kept me away prior to the movies, too.

That is some Gaston levels of shirt-ripping + chest hair right there, negl.

To be fair, he's been drawn a lot more decently than that. I love comics, but even I find that art unattractive. (Struggling to put my finger on the artist. Is it David Finch?)

It varies a lot from comic to comic. Some are a lot better than others. In general, I'd avoid the '90s like the plague.

This is honestly only a bit of an exaggeration of what was normal then:

In visual media, art style is very important. Doesn't seem all that weird that an art style you don't like would make you not want to watch something.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I have the same problem too OP. I tried to read one of the Cap issues at the library and I just... couldn't. It was a story I had been really wanting to read but the art killed all my desire.

I get that, some of the art in comics can be really super-macho and that can be a bit off-putting sometimes. But it varies a lot tbh so there should be something out there that will appeal to you.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Would anyone have any recommendations?

I've tried browsing a number of styles but it seems to range from horrific to just off-putting. I'd settle for tolerable, to be honest.

It's funny, because I saw gifs of the film that someone had edited to look like a comic book and thought they were great.

So, there are ton of Captain America books that don't look like that. Try Captain America & Bucky. The art is done by Chris Samnee which is more friendlier looking.

Not exactly the roid rage hulk in your secret, is he? He even looks like Chris Evans.

Same. It may be more "realistic" to have them be walls of beef, but it's not nice to look at.

As much as I like comics, I really, truly am bored of the modern "house style" of both Marvel and DC.

Which is why I'm so happy that DC seems to be hiring more and more diverse artists. Greg Capullo, Babs Starr, Cliff Chiang and Andrea Sorrentino have all made some truly lovely-looking comics.

Sometimes I wish superhero comics got drawn more like superhero cartoons with sleek simplistic styles.

I totally get you. I won't read Homestuck because I find the art awful.

[personal profile] chrys 2015-02-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's a lot better these days but yeah, several artists still overdo the muscular macho veiny look. Not everyone needs to be super bulky... Recently I came across an issue where shirtless Peter Quill had a bodybuilder's abs which completely clashed with how he usually looks when clothed in his solo. Maybe that's the only shirtless male body the artist knew how to draw.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I would agree with trying for comics that've come out around the time of the movie releases, because they usually try to play into that and draw the main characters to look like the movie versions for a bit. ("A variant on Hugh Jackman" was everywhere in X-men for a while.)

Or maybe direct movie tie-in comics? The "Homecoming" one doesn't really look like Chris Evans, but there may be others.

That's a legit complaint though. I ALWAYS gravitate towards artists who either do a very cartoony like style or who draw things a bit more realistically. Artists like in the secret? It doesn't matter if the story is good or not, I'll forgo it because it's terrible.

I don't think it's shallow or superficial.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
You want media that is very visually oriented to be visually pleasing to you. Nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-25 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
And this folks is why some writers will only work with certain artists and will drop a book if the company tries to shuffle artists on them. See Also: Warren Ellis.

Image: Captain America, from the comics [transcriber’s note: that is some FUGLY art] and promo art from the Winter Soldier

Text: I want to get into the Captain America comics (and other comics he appears in) but I find the way the male characters are drawn to be consistently off-putting, particularly in Steve’s case.

I wish he looked like he did in the films. And I wish I wasn’t so shallow and superficial in this regard.

If it makes you feel better OP, I dropped the X-Men when the drawing got to the point that I couldn't tell Jubilee and Wolverine apart. Because I have no time (or money) for bad comic art.
