ACD Holmes had his rough edges, but he wasn't an asshole to people the way BBC Sherlock's an asshole to people. ACD Holmes understood that if you treat people like they're worthless idiots, nobody will ask you to help them even if you're brilliant.

Yeah, I agree - they go too far the other way there. But Elementary Sherlock just does feel like a Sherlock to me at all;

That's how I feel about John in Sherlock. He's just not Watson. I can stretch my imagination to see the utter irritating asshole that is Sherlock as Holmes but John is just not right at all.

I agree, actually. I don't mind Cumberbatch's Holmes that much, but Watson has all sort of issues there for me.

Oh interesting. I only ever hear people complaining about various versions of Holmes so I've never gotten a good reading on how they feel about John.

Nah, I totally get what you mean with this one and feel similarly!

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't ever see Cumberbatch as Holmes, even if I wanted to.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean. It is and it isn't... the setting is too far removed from Baker Street, the characters are good but also removed from the originals. I think of it as a really detailed AU version where the writers have made a concerted effort to modernize it and have it be its own thing.

ACD Holmes definitely was a jerk a lot of the time. I disagree that BBC Sherlock is an asshole to everyone he meets. And he's gotten better as the series goes on, because that was the intent all along, to make him grow into a better person with John's influence (paraphrasing the writers).

Elementary's Sherlock is so OOC he is not even recognizable as Sherlock Holmes, imo

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
The only people I see expressing the idea that Elementary Sherlock is OOC always happen to be BBC Sherlock fans, so I kind of have to take a huge grain of salt whenever I hear it tbh.

Fair enough, but I was excited when Elementary was announced and made it through most of season one before I just gave up, as not only was he not SH in any way, the stories just didn't interest me at all. I also disliked LL before I even started watching, so that didn't help.

I would have loved an American modern Holmes that actually used elements of canon and had 20 episodes, but Elementary is not that show.

I don't really like Sherlock Holmes in any incarnation. Way back before there were movies and a bunch of TV shows, I tried reading the books. I never got very far because Holmes got on my nerves. He is the least sympathetic main character I have ever has the displeasure of reading about. He was a sufficient asshole who didn't relate to any other human being. If anyone helped him, well, that was just his due, after all, so no need for thanks or consideration in return.

Basically, not a nice person.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Which only shows the problem with judging things on a scant reading. Holmes isn't an easy character, but he is really not as you claim.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
DA-- a few yearsago I read the entire ACD canon, and came away disliking Holmes. Maybe it was who I was at the time and I'd feel differently if I tried again, but anon above isn't unique.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Who is BBC Sherlock nice to? I enjoy the show but I honestly cannot think of a single person.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Archie is the first person who comes to mind. He certainly is nice to Mary, who tried to kill him, lol

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
So... a one-off character that plays an extremely minor role. Calling his treatment of Mary "nice" is too much of a stretch, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he really wasn't. I realise that you are trying to be loyal to your show, but you just come across as someone utterly ignorant of ACD canon.
