I guess they feel like they interpreted things wrong? I mean, it must be really embarrasing to engage in discussions, write meta of your OTP and make headcanons just to be proven wrong in the end. Zutara, Harmony, NaruSaku and Taiora shippers have in common not just that their OTP didn't become a reality in the end but each part of their OTP married and had childrens with another person. Of course that doesn't justify the rabidness of those shippers but make their actitude a little more understable.

I think that's very possible. When it comes to ships that DO actually have the real potential to be canon, then the stakes in the "backing the right horse in this race" game become much higher than when you're metaing about a pair that has a virtually zero chance of becoming canon.

You don't run the risk of being proven (publically, loudly) wrong when you're backing something that has very little chance of playing out in canon. And some people invest greatly in Not Being Wrong (Ever) even when they are, so the rabidness may well come from that.
