Honestly I'd think you were being weirdly defensive about vanilla ice cream if a conversation went down this way, which is fitting I guess since I think people get more defensive than they need to about not caring about diversity (you can wait to prove that you're not doing anything wrong until someone actually accuses you of that). But I love vanilla too.

Because very often, in my experience, saying that a particular show not being diverse doesn't bother you gets you called a racist.

Which kind of grinds my gears because -- me -- I'm a Middle-Eastern woman. I don't get much representation at all. Would I like some? Sure. But if I limited myself to things with only Middle-Eastern women, then I'd have a pretty damn short list of media to explore.

And getting told I'm racist or that I "clearly don't understand" by people who get ten times the representation I do is frustrating.

So I'd rather just head it off by saying that, while I understand that someone else might not be into a show because it's too white, it's not a big deal for me because I'm good at tracking down shows with great representation, so I'm not about to turn one down that has great writing just because it's not diverse.

I think this is just one of those cases where you can't win since there's always going to be people reading it negatively. Some people will make that assumption if you don't head them off that way, but then others are more bothered by preemptive defenses like that.

You have my sympathies on the way people tell you that you don't understand. I would never presume to tell anyone what they do or don't understand because you never know who they are and what they've gone through, and I hate when people do that.
