Share some diverse media

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
For all those people who say they can't find it or only find "token" characters (Similar thread posted way late yesterday). BTW: I'm defining token as characters who exist solely in the background and don't really interact with the story in meaningful ways. If you have other definitions or want to debate perceived diversity, let's talk about that too.

Suggestions from yesterday:
Brooklyn 99
Teen Wolf
Grimm
Sleepy Hollow
Star Trek: Voyager
The Wire
Treme
HLOTS
Southland
Hawaii Five-0
Oz
OITNB
The Walking Dead
Noah's Arc

Heck, they even joke on the show about how many different demographic boxes the group can check off. Got a plus-size black character, a non-neurotypical Middle Eastern character, a formerly-relevant senior citizen who STILL can't go twelve episodes of a show before all the jokes become about the rest of the cast hating him...

Oh! I think that's a good one! Joe, Iris and Cisco, for sure.

To the Anon about Non-US media/shows

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, OP, sorry to hijack your thread, but I wanted to reach out, and since this is in the same vein:

Middle Eastern Lady Anon from yesterday---you said you knew some non US shows? I'm sure I'm not the only one to be interested in them, please share ! :D

Are we meaning diverse as in just racially diverse or also sexuality and gender, too? I'm going to go more inclusive, while excluding shows whose only claim to diversity is an even split between men and women for pairing purposes (Friends: I love you, but I'm looking at you.)

Men of a Certain Age
Criminal Minds

Man, that's all I've got right now (that hasn't been listed already).

Spartacus? Can't think of much else that hasn't been listed, but I'm probably leaving something out.

OITNB is Orange is the new Black, for anyone wondering.

If you're allowing LGBTI diversity, Orphan Black has quite a believable amount covered.

Grey's Anatomy?
I vaguely recall Smallville
Lost - first few seasons are fun, ignore the latter...
First Contact - a short documentary
Fresh off the Boat
Falling Skies - I haven't watched this yet, it's on the list

Grey's definitively count! Callie said she was Bisexual twice in the same episode, we had a trans* person last episode and we got a lesbian and some non-white characters and most of the cast is females.

The Closer was pretty good in terms of the racial diversity of LA, and the avoiding stereotypes thing. I just wish there were more than 3 prominent female cop characters (and Raydor and Daniels weren't ever on the show at the same time) + Brenda's mom.

Better diversity in S1-4 when Daniels was on the team (female, black and Latina, and at 39 in S1, one of the younger cast members). But still not bad at all.

Sleepy Hollow. Yes, we have very!white! Ichabod Crane, but the other characters are Abbie Mills and her sister, who are both black. One is a Sheriff's Detective (detective for the sheriff's department) one has a bit of a checkered past (mental illness) but she secretly worked with the (now dead) original sheriff to collect 'supernatural' and esoteric paraphernalia. The new sheriff is a Latina woman (older woman), the ex-Capt. of the depart (things happened that are spoilery, there's a reason he's the ex) is also black.

One of the main 'is he good or is he bad??' buys from season one was Asian. The other main white character also had spoilery things happen that mean we probably won't be seeing them again for a long time, if ever. So - pretty diverse!

China Mieville's works. They include a vast array of characters, and such amazingly interesting worlds I honestly think people are missing out on some amazing fantasy if they're not reading him.

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. Most characters are Hispanic.

Death in Paradise

Only one white main cast member, but never gets mentioned in these discussions, I guess because it's a "cosy" show aimed at an older audience

Major Crimes is pretty diverse, with a mix of races, ages and sexualities. In the main case, it's led by an older (60+) white woman, and then you've got two older white guys, an Asian guy, two Latino guys, a young black woman, an older black guy, and two younger white guys. There are a couple of other female characters in the supporting cast. At least two of the characters are openly gay. It's not perfect - no gay female characters, for example, but it's not bad at all. And none of them are token characters in any way, I'd say.
